The church, first mentioned in 1220, is the oldest church in the Ötztal and is surrounded by a cemetery . It was expanded in 1482 in the Gothic style. A renaissance cross on the triumphal arch was added in 1580. In a chapel niche in the cemetery wall there is a rococo sculpture of St. Vitus. A votive chapel consecrated to St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1771 on the 3rd northern nave yoke in the baroque style; The occasion was a mudslide that hit Umhausen in 1762. The neo-Gothic altar dates from 1882. During a restoration in 1964/65, Gothic frescoes (very rare in North Tyrol) were uncovered on the southern outer wall and inside on the northern wall of the nave. The organ loft was pulled in in 1889 for the installation of a Reinisch organ; For the installation of a new organ, the gallery was restored to its original state in 2009. To the west of the church is a chapel for the dead with a remarkable Gothic carved pietà from the third quarter of the 14th century.

However, it was partially destroyed in 1684 when a magnificently designed, six-sided corner bay window with stucco decoration was added. In 1860 the building was increased to three storeys. The municipal coat of arms on the bay window (top right) was only added in the course of a renovation in 2004. On the first floor in the oriel room there is carved stone pine paneling from 1684, this room has served as a registry office since 1999. There are mouth-blown slug panes in the windows .
