The significance of Beethoven's chamber music in terms of music history

String quartets
Six string quartets op.18 (1800)
They were written between 1798 and 1800 and published in Vienna in 1801. As with Joseph Haydn , 6 quartets are combined into a cycle. They were written at the same time as Haydn's Erdödi quartets . The origin does not match the numbering. Beethoven ventured late to the form of the string quartet; Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had written groundbreaking works in the past few years (see List of Chamber Music Works by Haydn and List of Chamber Music Works by Mozart ). The first quartet was revised several times before it was published. Beethoven's tonal language is already recognizable in the first quartet: sudden changes between major and minor, as well as the development from small motifs, such as Haydn's B. practiced in his quartet of fifths .
