List of roller coaster terms
Alphabetical listing of the technical terms used in roller coasters . In some cases, product names from roller coaster manufacturers are also listed here if the terms have established themselves as a general name or are often confused.
Since there are no adequate German-language terms for many things, English expressions are mostly used.

- 4th Dimension Coaster - roller coaster in which the seats rotate vertically around a horizontal axis

- Banking - slope of the rail in curves
- Batwing - Inversion, consisting of a reverse sidewinder with a subsequent sidewinder ; Entry and exit are in opposite directions, so that a change in direction of 180 ° occurs
- Pelvis bar - see lap bar
- Blackout - Brief loss of consciousness while driving due to high g-forces
- Boomerang - Widely used roller coaster model from Vekoma or a driving element, see Cobra-Roll

- Dive Coaster - roller coaster with free fall

- Family roller coaster - roller coaster that is mainly designed for families with small children, usually without rollover elements and with moderate acceleration forces
- First Drop - First descent on a roller coaster
- Floating Airtime - Airtime with g-forces around 0g
- Floorless Coaster - roller coaster in which the trains run on the rails but the legs are hanging freely in the air
- Flying Coaster - roller coaster where the passenger is in a lying position
- Footchopper - (English for "foot chopper") element under the route that comes very close to the passengers' feet
- Friction Wheels - Friction wheels for transporting the car

- g -force - forces that act on a body when accelerating
- Giga-Coaster - Intamin's product name for roller coasters with a height of more than 92 meters (300 feet)
H
- Suspended coaster - see suspended coaster , sometimes referred to as German term for inverted coaster used
- Head chopper - (English for "head chopper") element above the route that comes very close to the heads of the passengers
- Heartline Roll - Inversion, in which the passengers are rotated around the heart line
- Helix - element that consists of an upward or downward curve of different lengths
- Heart line - rotation of the splint not around the splint center, but approximately at the height of the heart
- Wooden roller coaster - roller coaster whose tracks and often also exist wooden structure
- Horseshoe - element that resembles a horseshoe
- Hydraulic Launch - a launch technique that uses hydraulics
- Hyper Coaster - roller coaster of great height, usually more than 60 meters (200 feet)

- Immelmann - Inversion, consisting of half a loop followed by half a roll
- Immelmann-Turn - vertical, inclined 180-degree curve
- Inclined Loop - Looping that is tilted to the side
- Inline twist - roll around the rail
- Inversion - rollover element
- Inverted Coaster - roller coaster where the train hangs under the rail and the legs are outdoors

- Kiddie coaster / children's roller coaster - roller coaster that even younger children can ride alone, mostly small systems with only low acceleration forces
- Corkscrew - Inversion, where the splint is twisted like a corkscrew

- Lap bar - lap bar
- Launched Coaster - roller coaster with launch
- Layout - design of the route
- Lifthill - elevator hill
- LIM / LSM - linear induction motor / linear synchronous motor, drive type for roller coasters
- Looping - inversion that reproduces a vertically standing circle or drop
M.
- Mouse curve - tight curve without cross slope
- Mega Coaster - roller coaster, between 50 and 70 m high, originally a product name of the companies Intamin and Bolliger & Mabillard, has also been adopted as a name for other large systems
- Mine Train Coaster - see Mine Coaster
- Mine roller coaster - roller coaster type with theming as a mine, often in connection with the theme "Wild West"
- Möbius roller coaster - eight-lane double system with only one route that resembles a Möbius strip

- Offride video - video recording from the perspective of an outsider
- Onride photo - also known as "action photo" - a photo of the passengers in a ride while driving, can usually be purchased
- Onride video - video recording from the driver's perspective or video recording of the passenger while driving
- O (T) SR - Abbreviation for "Over (The) Shoulder Restraint"; see shoulder strap
- Out & Back - routing on roller coasters that does not require large turns
- Overbanked turn - curve with a bank of over 90 °

- Powered Coaster - roller coaster where the train has a built-in drive
- Predrop - Small descent before the actual First Drop
- Pretzel loop - inversion in the form of a pretzel, often on Flying Coaster
- Pretzel-Knot - Batwing, in which the entry and exit rails cross

- Racing roller coaster - system in which the vehicles deliver a race on several tracks
- Reverse Freefall Coaster - roller coaster model from the manufacturer Intamin , for an example see Superman: Escape from Krypton
- Reverse Sidewinder - Inversion, consisting of half a corkscrew followed by a half loop
- Ride Operator - operators of a roller coaster
- Rocket Coaster - name of a type whose train is accelerated horizontally hydraulically, see Launched Coaster
- Roll-over - looping in which a complete roll is inserted at the top
- Rollback - rolling back the train
- Roll - Inversion, in which the train is rotated around an imaginary axis that is horizontal and oriented in the direction of travel
- Roll-back protection - Prevents the train from unintentionally rolling back if the lift drive fails

- Lap bar - restraint system that secures the lap area and allows the upper body as much freedom of movement as possible
- Shoulder bar - restraint system in the form of U-shaped bars that secure the upper body
- Sea-Serpent-Roll - inversion like Cobra Roll; However, the entrance and exit are in the same direction, so that there is no change in direction
- Shuttle Coaster - roller coaster that does not have a closed course
- Shuttle Loop - roller coaster model from the manufacturer Schwarzkopf GmbH , for an example see turbine

- Stand-Up Coaster - roller coaster where passengers stand while driving

- Stratacoaster - name for a roller coaster over 120 m high
- Suspended Coaster - roller coaster in which the carriages drive under the rail and swing out to the side
- Suspended Looping Coaster - Inverted Coaster roller coaster model by Vekoma
T
- Top-Hat - hills with a vertical rise and fall
- Transfer Track - part of the rail that can be moved; mainly to get trains from the siding onto the line
- Trimbrake - brake on the track to reduce the speed of the train slightly
- Lift drum - lifthill , in which the conveyed train of a central rotating carrier on a helix upwards
U
- Underfriction-Wheels / Upstop-Wheels - Wheels on the roller coaster that grip the rail from below and prevent lifting
W.
- Water Coaster - water roller coaster
- Wilde Maus - roller coaster with individual carriages and without a cross slope of the rail
- Wooden Coaster - see wooden roller coaster
Z
- Zero-G-Roll - role in which the driver experiences weightlessness
