List of rockpools in Australia
In Australia , and especially in Sydney and New South Wales , rockpools are man-made swimming pools that are located on the coast on rocky ground and are bordered by walls made of plastered brick , natural rubble or concrete. They are often found in connection with sandy beaches. Many of them are washed over by the tides or waves. They still offer protection from surf, currents and dangerous marine animals.
The Rockpools have a long historical tradition in Australia, three of them have been entered in monument protection lists due to their importance. The first rockpool in Australia, called the Bogey Hole , was built by convicts between 1819 and 1822, when Australia was still a British convict colony .
In the Australian state of New South Wales there are about 100 rock pools , which are about 44 in the coastal area of Sydney with its suburbs. The Rockpools are concentrated in New South Wales on the eastern suburbs and the Northern Beaches of Sydney, on the south coast between Illawarra and Shoalhaven and on the central coast around Newcastle . Almost all of them can be used for free.
There are no significant numbers of rockpools in the states of Victoria and Western Australia .
Rock pools are called differently, for example also rock pool or ocean pool . There are also regional names that are based on the history of the country and the Aborigines .
The lengths of the pools are usually around 50 meters, but they are quite different.
