Sphinx cigarette advertising by Georg A. Jasmatzi

Cigarette production has had a long tradition in Dresden since Compagnie Laferme was founded in 1862. In 1931, 12,000 tons of oriental tobacco were processed in Dresden. Some companies existed only for a short time, while others for a longer period of time, e.g. Some of them were active until they were destroyed in 1945. In addition to a few smaller companies, according to the Dresden Commercial Register in 1945, the following large cigarette factories also existed: Jasmatzi, Yenidze, Greiling, Geissinger, Kosmos, Monopol and Union. These were expropriated after the referendum in Saxony in 1946 and continued as VEB Jasmatzi Cigarettenfabrik, VEB Importtabak, VEB Greiling Zigarettenfabrik, VEB Macedonia, VEB Zigarettenfabrik Kosmos, VEB Monopol Zigarettenfabrik and VEB Union. Jasmatzi, Greiling, Macedonia and Kosmos merged in 1959 to form VEB Dresdner Zigarettenfabriken, from 1982 VEB Vereinigte Zigarettenfabriken Dresden. The privatized company was then taken over by the Philip Morris Group in 1990 and continued as f6 Cigarettenfabrik Dresden GmbH . From 1990 to 2019 only the company f6 Cigarettenfabrik GmbH & Co.KG produced, so that there is currently no larger company in this branch in Dresden.
