The Little Cottonwood River is a 133 km long tributary of the Minnesota River in southwest Minnesota in the United States .

About the Minnesota River it is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River and drains an area of ​​596 km² in an agricultural region.

The river rises south of Jeffers in Amboy Township in Cottonwood County , where it begins as a drainage ditch . At its upper reaches, the river follows a more north-easterly direction and flows past rock outcrops such as the Jeffers Petroglyphs . It flows through Brown County and then reaches the northwest of Blue Earth County , where it flows into the Minnesota River in Cambria Township , about 11 km southeast of New Ulm . Most of its lower reaches runs roughly parallel to the Cottonwood River , which lies between 5 and 15 km further north. The catchment area of ​​the river is narrow and has no major tributaries. The terrain in this area consists mainly of ground moraine fields and in the 1990s 90% of the area was cultivated for agriculture.

The fish species found in the river include black dwarf catfish and yellow catfish , stone bass , sucker carp , and various types of jumping bass .

At the gauge of the United States Geological Survey in Cambria Township, about 1100 m above the river mouth, the average discharge rate between 1974 and 2005 was 2 m³ / s. The highest measured value during this period was on June 20, 1993 with 100 m³ / s and the lowest was measured on September 17, 1977 with (rounded) 0 m³ / s.
