St. Nikolaus , formerly the Catholic parish church of Lobloch

Lobloch was an old Palatinate wine-growing village that lost its independence in 1751 and was opened up in the larger neighboring town of Gimmeldingen . This, known as Gimmeldingen-Lobloch from 1860 to 1952 , was incorporated into the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in 1969 .

The name is preserved e.g. B. in the name Loblocher Straße for the functionally former main street of the place or in the Lobloch castle , which is, however, east of the old district boundary. Sometimes the name is still used, especially among older residents, to clarify the location of a certain point in Gimmeldingen.

history

In the 11th century Lobloch, which is also referred to in literature as "Luploch" or "Lupphenloch", apparently had its nucleus in the floodplain south of the hill on which the center of Gimmeldingen is located. The second part of the name ( -loch from Latin lacus for lake, pond) indicates that there was a water mill on the Mußbach flowing there, for which a small reservoir was built in order to have enough water available even in periods of poor rainfall . The first part of the name has not been clarified with certainty; it could be the Franconian first name Luppo , which should refer to the most important man in the founding phase of the place, possibly the postulated Müller.

St. Nicholas Church

New inauguration in 1957

When a hamlet and then a small village arose around the presumed mill in the Middle Ages , the Nikolauskirche was built 100 m north, up the slope . It was first mentioned in a document in 1366 and was originally built in Romanesque style . During the High Gothic period , it was replaced by a successor building that still used elements from the previous building, especially the tower . Robbed of its roof in the turmoil after the War of the Palatinate Succession (1688–1697), the church fell into ruin for two and a half centuries before it was restored in the 1950s and rededicated in 1957.

In the details that have been preserved, the Nikolauskirche is considered a jewel of medieval craftsmanship . The three windows in the altar area are worth seeing. They consist of stained glass mosaics that are modeled on the Gothic style and show stations from the life and work of the church patron St. Nicholas as they are passed down in legends .

The small Lobloch never had its own parish office , but was provided for centuries by parishes from the surrounding area (mostly Mußbach ).

Mithras sanctuary

Mithras relief image

The Nikolauskirche stands on the area of a Mithras shrine from Roman times . In 325 AD the Roman Materninius Faustinus had the temple built in honor of the god of light and spring, who had been taken over from Persia . During construction work in 1926, the foundations of the temple and a stone relief image were found west of the church ; it shows the deity sitting astride a bull and sacrificing it by stabbing the carotid artery. The original of the relief is in the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer , a replica made of light sandstone is embedded in a boundary wall a piece to the left of the entrance to the Nikolauskirche (Loblocher Straße).

Regular events

The Lobloch wine tenth is a reminder of Lobloch , a wine festival that is celebrated in Gimmeldingen every year at Whitsun. The most important festival event in Gimmeldingen, the Almond Blossom Festival in March / April, is also related to Lobloch. Its best-known vineyard is namely the almond garden , which was mentioned in an interest book of the Alsatian monastery in Weißenburg as early as the 15th century . This is located at the junction of Lobloch and thus Gimmeldingen to the neighboring district of Mußbach and has been identical to the former single location Gimmeldinger Meerspinne since it was upgraded to a major location.

Personalities

Johannes Cardinal von Geissel (1796–1864) was born in Lobloch. He was Catholic Archbishop of Cologne from 1845 until his death and is considered one of the most important German churchmen of his time. Gimmeldingen honored him with a street dedication in the new building area in Lobloch, and in Kurpfalzstr. 182 above the Nikolauskirche still stands his birthplace with a memorial plaque.
