The Loddon River is a river in the north of the Australian state of Victoria .

course

The tributary of the Murray River rises at Trentham and flows from there to Glenlyon . From there it turns its course north through Guildford and Newstead into the Cairn Curran Reservoir and on into the Laanecoorie Reservoir . It flows around Bendigo in the west at a distance of around 40 kilometers at Bridgewater-on-Loddon . Then its course leads through serpentine and further north to Kerang . There the river turns to the northwest and flows parallel to the Little Murray River until it finally flows into it at Benjeroop .

There are weirs in Bridgwater-on-Loddon and Kerang that ensure cities have water year round, but elsewhere the Loddon River can dry out in summer. Efforts are currently being made to restore the Loddon River to year-round water retention.

Water sports, including water skiing , can be enjoyed above the weir at Bridgewater-on-Loddon . The two aforementioned reservoirs are used for motor boating and sailing.

River course

From Lyonville to Newstead

Loddon River at Vaughan Springs

The source of the river is at Lyonville, from where the Loddon River flows north to Glenlyon. There he crosses under the main road from Daylesford to Malmsbury and continues his run to Loddon Falls . The main road from Drummond to Vaughan Forest crosses the river in three places and the Porcupine Ridge Road crosses at Vaughan Springs . Other river crossings are the Kemps Bridge Road , the Midland Highway south of Guildford, and the Punt Road and the Pyrenees Highway in Newstead.

From Newstead to Bridgewater-on-Loddon

North of Newstead, the river enters the Cairns Curran Reservoir . At its outlet is Baringhup where there is another flyover . This is followed by the main road from Baringhup West to Eastville , Rumbolds Road , Pickering Lane , Back Eddington Road and the main road from Bendigo to Maryborough near Eddington .

In Laanecoorie , the Janevale Bridge , a historic reinforced concrete girder bridge from 1911, crosses the river. Then the Loddon River crosses the Laanecoorie Reservoir and flows north under the main road from Tarnagulla to Laanegoorie through to Newbridge, where it crosses under the Wimmera Highway . From Newbridge the run leads to Bridgewater-on-Loddon in the north.

From Bridgewater-on-Loddon to the weir at Serpentine

Loddon River at Bridgewater-on-Loddon

At Bridgewater-on-Loddon the river is used for water skiing. There is a 3.2 km long water ski course, as well as a 950 m long slalom and a water ski jumping area. Some of the competitions held there are the Australian Championships in January, the Pre- Moomba competition in February and the Bridgewater Ski Club competition . In addition, there is a 90 m long swimming stretch at the Flour Mill weir.

If the water level is sufficient, you can go whitewater kayak grade 3 at Mill Rapid below the overpass of the Calder Highway . You can get there by small streets on the west bank. Above the Calder Highway bridge is a quieter stretch for canoes and kayaks, but boaters have to share the river there with swimmers, fishermen and water-skiers.

At Bridgwater-on-Loddon the Calder Highway crosses the river and south of Serpentine the railway line from Eaglehawk to Inglewood . The fish in this area include the codfish species Maccullochella peelii (Murray cod, "Murraydorsch") and Macquaria ambigua (golden perch, "golden perch")

From the weir at Serpentine to the Loddon weir

This 15 km long river section with high water level even in summer starts at the small concrete weir in Serpentine.

From Loddon Weir to Macorna Channel

At the Loddon Weir at Fernihurst , a road leads to the river so that boats can be launched into the water. After the weir, water is diverted to the Waranga Basin . The water below the weir can be five to seven meters deep. There you can fish for perch , Macquaria ambigua (golden perch), Bidyanus bidyanus (silver perch), carp and, to a lesser extent, Maccullochella peelii (Murray cod). Below the Loddon Weir, the river is on average 7-14 m wide - at some points even up to 26 m; the bank is three meters high. The following roads cross the river in this area: Lagoona Road , Main Road from Borung to Hurstwood , Ellerslie Road , Majors Line Road , Main Road from Boort to Pyramid , Main Road from Boort to Yando , Main Road from Canary Island to Leaghur , Appin South Road , Hewitt Road and Wood Lane .

From the Macorna Channel to the weir at Kerang

Ten kilometers south of Kerang , the water level has increased due to the inflow from the Macorna Channel and remains that way for the next 15 km to the weir at Kerang. In 2008 a fish ladder was built at the weir.

In Kerang, the Old Kerang Road , Murray Valley Highway, and the Swan Hill railroad cross the river.

From the weir at Kerang to the confluence with the Little Murray River (Murray River)

The last section of the river leads through logs and eucalyptus forests . The main fish species there are perch, golden bass and Murray cod. Below Kerang, West Road , O'Donoghues Bridge Road , Baulch Road and Little Charm Road ( Wells Bridge ) cross the river. The river finally flows into the Little Murray River, a left branch of the Murray River, at Benjeroop.
