Lomske , Upper Sorbian , is a small town in the center of the Bautzen district in East Saxony and has been part of the Neschwitz community since 1936 . The place is located in Upper Lusatia and is part of the Sorbian settlement area .
geography
Lomske is located about 13 kilometers northwest of the district town of Bautzen, about 15 meters above the valley of the Puschwitz water , which flows by in the southeast. In the floodplain there is an oak forest protected as a natural monument. The small round village is surrounded by forest on three sides, the landscape is only open to the east. The terrain slopes slightly on all sides, so that Lomske is a few meters higher than its neighboring towns. The next higher elevation is the Spitzberg (187 m) one kilometer to the west. There is also a group of houses called Lissahora (Liša Hora) on the Lomsk corridor .
The neighboring towns are Neschwitz in the east, Neupuschwitz and Wetro in the south and Doberschütz in the west.
history
In the forest to the northwest of Lomske - also known as Die Lomske - there are around 30 burial mounds from the Bronze Age , which suggest an early settlement. However, today's place was first mentioned as Lombschitz in 1511 , much later than the neighboring settlements . Seven years later Lumpschk is mentioned as a knight's seat . The place name is derived from the Sorbian word łom for a wood quarry or swamp bush.
Until 1841, the place was under the rule of the Neschwitz estate , which at times maintained an outbuilding here . Lomske then formed an independent rural community with the district of Lissahora until April 1, 1936, before it was incorporated into Neschwitz.
On April 25, 1942, the National Socialists executed the Polish slave laborer Stanisław Błażejczuk in the forest north of Lomske. A memorial stone has been commemorating the crime since 2018.
population
In 1925 Lomske had 61 residents; 51 of them were Evangelical Lutheran (84%). The place has been part of the Neschwitz parish since the 16th century .
For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 72 inhabitants in the 1880s; 71 of them were Sorbs (99%) and one German.
In the 20th century, especially after 1990, the population of Lomske decreased sharply, so that today it only has about 20 residents.
