geography

The place is located about ten kilometers northwest of the large district town of Bautzen and two kilometers south of the community center in the Upper Lusatian region. To the east of Uebigau extends the valley floodplain of the Schwarzwassers , where fish ponds were located until the 19th century. The former meadow landscape has been used intensively for agriculture since the river was straightened. The terrain rises to the west.

The settlement core of Uebigau is laid out in the form of a circular hamlet and today forms the eastern half of the village. The manor is located on the northern outskirts in the direction of Neschwitz. The neighboring towns are Neschwitz in the north, Kleinholscha in the northeast, Luga in the southeast, Krinitz in the south and Wetro (municipality of Puschwitz ) in the west.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1353 as Obegow . Other forms of name listed include a. Ibgaw (1485), Obige / Obigaw (1528) and Ybingen (1590). However, there had already been a moated castle with a diameter of about 25 meters on the site of the property, the remains of which are now overbuilt. Uebigau has been the seat of a manor since the 15th century at the latest, which also held the lordship in the village, but was under the control of the Neschwitz Castle.

In the early 19th century there was a branch of the Neschwitzer School in Uebigau, the building of which was overcrowded.

Until April 1, 1936, Uebigau was an independent rural community with the district Krinitz; then it was incorporated into Saritsch and on July 1, 1993 together with this to Neschwitz.

Place name

The old Sorbian Oběgov is assumed to be the basic form , which would designate a place at the bend in the river or a river circulation and describe the geographical location of Uebigau.

population

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 142 inhabitants in the 1880s; 135 of them were Sorbs (95%) and seven were Germans. Since then, the use of the Sorbian language in the village has decreased significantly.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the population doubled from 84 in 1834 to 170 in 1925. In the 20th century, especially after 1990, it fell again significantly.

The believing residents are almost exclusively of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination and parish to Neschwitz.
