Lone Star is an American film directed by independent director John Sayles in 1996. The inhabitants of a small border town and their involvement in events that go back almost forty years are portrayed.

action

A forty-year-old skeleton is found in a Texas border town with Mexico . Sheriff Sam Deeds discovers it's one of his predecessors, Charlie Wade. This was racist and corrupt . Wade was the assistant to the judge at the time, who owned everything in the area at the time. Crimes themselves did not bother either of them, but they were very bothered if they did not share in the proceeds. If people didn't pay, they were shot. Pilar's father, with whom Sam was a teenager, is also among those killed.

Only the deputy sheriff Buddy Deeds, Sam's father, openly opposed his superior. Shortly thereafter, Wade disappeared, and Buddy became his popular successor. Now that Bud himself is dead, he is to receive a memorial. Therefore, it does not suit the dignitaries of the city that Sam increasingly suspects his father, with whom he had a difficult relationship, of murder. Among other things, Buddy suppressed his son's love for Pilar, who came from Mexico, and both of them are now taking up again as adults. Pilar works as a teacher at the local school. She is widowed and has two teenage children.

These studies are mixed up with images of a city in the 1950s , in which the oppression of the various minorities of Afro-Americans , Mexicans , Latinos and Indians took place on all levels. But even forty years later, the various ethnic groups are still fighting over the right school lessons and are essentially keeping to one another . There is still a pub only for “blacks” and multiracial relationships are not welcome.

Another storyline highlights the relationship between pub owner Otis Payne and his son, Colonel Delmore Payne. Delmore becomes the commander of the local base and therefore returns with his family to the place of his childhood. He refuses to contact his father Otis, who often neglected him in his childhood because of his work. He repeats his father's mistakes with his son himself. When Delmore finally pays his father a visit, it is for official reasons, as he is considering banning his soldiers from these visits due to a gunfight among soldiers in the pub. He refuses to ask his father Otis for private contact. It is only after talking to a black soldier who has been convicted of drug use that Delmore realizes that people can have different life plans and decides to approach both his son and his father.

The story is also about Pilar's mother, Mercedes, who refuses to acknowledge her Mexican roots to her daughter and demands that her employees speak English. It was only when one of her employees smuggled his fiancée into the United States that it was discovered that she herself immigrated illegally.

In the course of the investigation, Sam gains more and more knowledge and receives information about his father that calls into question his status as a legend. Buddy cheated on his wife and used money from the community treasury to give his lover and her daughter an economic basis by buying a restaurant. Sam discovers that his father's illegitimate daughter is Pilar. Sam also learns that the fatal shot was fired at Wade when he tried to shoot Otis Payne in cold blood.

Sam and Pilar want to live their love despite the fact that they are half siblings. The fact that Pilar can no longer get pregnant after complications during the birth of her daughter makes this decision even easier. You decide to start over and let the old stories rest.

"An intelligent reflection on human behavior and its freedom that challenges our viewing habits, which is formally spellbound and whose psychological realism promotes our own reflection."
