Lorenz Möller

Lorenz Möller , also Laurentius Moller (born March 24, 1560 in Lübeck ; † March 8, 1634 ibid) was a German lawyer, councilor of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and Schleswig-Holstein and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Möller was the son of the rector from Livonia at the Katharineum in Lübeck, Lorenz Möller . To study law, he went to the universities of Rostock (1579), Wittenberg and Heidelberg. In Heidelberg in 1590, after a disputation chaired by Julius Pacius de Beriga, he was promoted to Dr. jur. utr. PhD. As an administrative lawyer, he initially worked for the dukes of Mecklenburg and Holstein-Gottorf. In 1610 he was elected to the council of the city of Lübeck and from 1612–1617 was the city's treasurer. In 1615 he was leader of a Lübeck embassy to the Danish court in Copenhagen. In 1619 he was appointed one of the mayors . Together with the mayor Heinrich Köhler and Christoph Gerdes , he was responsible until his death for the prudent council policy during the first period of the Thirty Years' War , which only entered into the most essential alliances and alliances. Travemünde was fortified during his tenure . The citadel there was not demolished until 1831.

From 1613 to 1626 he was head of the Aegidienkirche at the time when the organ was rebuilt in 1624 to 1626. Therefore, his coat of arms with those of the other church leaders can be found as a carving on the organ of this church. In 1629 he was head of the Marienkirche in Lübeck . His Mannerist epitaph in cartilage style from the workshop of the Eckernförde carver Hans Gudewerth the Younger with a portrait of the painter Hans von Hembsen in the dance of death chapel of the Marienkirche burned during the air raid on Lübeck in 1942. Möller's portrait is in the mayor's gallery in Lübeck's town hall . Another coat of arms of Lorenz Möller is on the oath chapel of the Lübeck lower court , today in the St. Anne's Museum .

He was married to Magdalena geb. Bonnus, a daughter of the mayor Arnold Bonnus and granddaughter of the Lübeck reformer Hermann Bonnus . One of the couple's daughters married the later mayor of Lübeck, Gottschalk von Wickede, in his first marriage.
