Life

education

After high school he studied in Hamburg, Lausanne and Berlin Jura . He completed his studies and legal clerkship in Hamburg and began in 1971 as a consultant for labor and commercial law at the Economic and Social Science Institute (WSI) of the DGB . In 1972 he moved to the social policy department of the DGB federal executive committee. In 1971 Schwegler became a member of the SPD and in 1972 a member of the Public Services, Transport and Traffic Union . In 1977 Schwegler moved to the Trade Union Trade, Banks and Insurance (HBV) as department secretary for banks, insurance and labor law, where he was elected to the main executive board in 1980.

Union chairman

In 1988 he was elected HBV chairman, succeeding Günter Volkmar . As chairman, Schwegler also tried, among other things, to establish contacts with the competing German employee union (DAG). Lorenz Schwegler was a member of the supervisory board of both Dresdner Bank and Deutsche Bank . Schwegler's efforts to reform the structures of the HBV and the DGB, especially after German reunification , met with resistance, not least within the HBV. In his opinion, environmental protection should be given a high priority in the trade unions, membership recruitment should be centralized at the DGB and, in his opinion, the trade unions should not fall short of what their own members experience in the companies in terms of modernity and efficiency. For him, the decisive field in shaping the future was the relationship between work and family. Due to the persistent criticism that accompanied his reform attempts, he resigned from the office of chairman at the end of October 1993. Schwegler then settled as a lawyer for labor in Dusseldorf down and is a partner in a large law firm.

Lorenz Schwegler was a former pianist of the Low Down Wizards jazz troupe in Hamburg with Abbi Hübner .
