Lorenzo Bellini (born September 3, 1643 in Florence , † January 8, 1704 ibid) was an Italian anatomist and kidney physiologist .

Life

Lorenzo Bellini studied mathematics and philosophy in Pisa . At the age of 20 he was appointed professor of theoretical medicine. He was a student of Giovanni Alfonso Borelli and at the age of 25 became professor of anatomy and chair holder in Pisa. Bellini worked anatomically on the kidneys and discovered the Bellini ducts named after him (urinary duct, collecting tube , old names Ductus Bellini or Tubulus Bellini ). Bellini duct carcinoma , a rare form of renal cell carcinoma , forms in these ducts (in the medullary collecting tubule) . Bellini also intuitively recognized the urine filter mechanism.

His theory of urination , published in 1680 , according to which the " serum " separated from the blood enters the kidney ducts and the blood freed from the serous "humor" enters the veins, was valid until the 19th century. Since 1691 he was a member of the Accademia della Crusca . In 1699 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

Bellini died in 1704 after bleeding from the stomach.
