The Roman Catholic Loretto Chapel in Clervaux ( lux. : Loretokapell to Klierf ; double. : Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lorette and Notre Dame de Lorette chapel ) in the municipality of Clervaux (lux .: Klierf ; French .: Clervaux ) belongs to the parish Clierf and Saint-Benoît and thus to the Archdiocese of Luxembourg (lux .: Äerzbistum Lëtzebuerg ), which includes the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

The Loretto Chapel serves - like many European Loreto chapels - the veneration of the Virgin Mary . The Loretto veneration ( Santa Casa ), originally from Italy, was brought across the Alps by Jesuits during the Counter Reformation . According to the language adopted from Italian , the chapel is also called the Loreto chapel .

history

Around 1680 a chapel was built in the Wëldpark of Clervaux Castle by Albert Eugene de Lannoy (Count of Clervaux ) and his wife Jeanne-Therese-Claire de Bocholtz, which developed into a pilgrimage destination and was looked after by a hermit . The current chapel was built in 1762 by Adrien-Jean-Baptiste de Lannoy, the then Count of Clervaux, and his wife Constance de Wignacourt in the Baroque / Rococo style in place of the old chapel. The chapel was inaugurated on June 28, 1769 by the auxiliary bishop of Liège , Karl-Alexander von Arberg and Vallengin . Today it is state property.

The chapel was on 28 January 1982 as a national monument (lux .: klasséierte Monument ) classified .

From 1996 to 2011 the chapel was extensively restored.

location

The chapel stands on a small hill in the park of Clervaux above the Klerf . The Clervaux train station is very close by.

building

The nave of the chapel has the shape of an elongated octagon .

Above the entrance is the double coat of arms of the builders of the chapel, above this coat of arms a relief of Our Lady of Loretto . The sculptures in the chapel are made of Bloe Steen (French: pierre bleue ), a natural stone that occurs mainly in Wallonia and the Aachen area in Germany .

The vaulted ceiling is decorated with stucco . In the middle of the altar is a silk painting depicting the Madonna of Loretto. According to tradition, this painting is said to have been brought to Clervaux by Charles de Lannoy (around 1487–1527), viceroy of Naples ( Italy ). Stylistic details, however, show that it dates from the 18th century.

A painting by the Belgian painter François Walschartz (1595–1675) hangs above the side altars . Both pictures come from the Franciscan monastery of Bolland . Félix-Balthasar-Adrien de Lannoy brought these paintings to Clervaux during the French Revolution . They are owned by the church factory .

Two tombstones made of Bloe Steen and white marble are to the side of the high altar in memory of Albert-Eugène de Lannoy (d. 1697) and his wife Anne-Marie de Reede (left) as well as Adrien-Gérard de Lannoy (d. 1730) and Thérèse de Bocholt. The tombstones come from the Franciscan Church in Ulflingen and were brought to the Loretto Chapel during the French Revolution.

The tower of the chapel originally served as a hermit residence. That is why there is a gallery above the main altar on which the hermit could attend the service .
