At the foot of the tower is the historic pilot's watch from 1854. The small building was made of bricks on a base made of field stones . The house was initially covered with reeds and later with roof tiles. Previously, an old wheelhouse of a ship was located on the site as a pilot watch . Initially, the pilots were able to heat the guardhouse themselves in winter at their own expense. This is indicated by the remains of a chimney to the right of the window. In addition, the building was used to store water level signals.

The shipping traffic in the surrounding sea areas was heavy. In addition to the Oberwache on the mountain, a so-called Unterwache had been set up in Thiessow itself. It was located near the pilot commander's house and initially consisted of an old wooden, conical sea barrel . In the bin there was a signal bell made by the government in Stralsund in 1842. In rainy weather, the on-duty pilot of the lower watch could look for shelter in the bin. The upper guard's alarm signals, which could not be heard in parts of the village in bad weather, were passed on from the lower guard. In 1861 a massive building was built for the Unterwache as well. With the introduction of electric bells in 1907, the Unterwache became superfluous and was finally demolished in 1921.

In 1892/93 a wooden floor was added to the pilot watch because the view from the guard hut was inadequate. The upper floor consisted of a wooden beam construction and was surrounded on all four sides by a covered walkway. The entrance to the upper floor was from the outside via a wooden staircase on the north side. After the structure had become dilapidated and it was necessary to raise it again because of taller trees, the pilot tower was built next to the upper guard in 1909. It consisted of a steel frame clad with wood and was inaugurated on November 8, 1909.

In 1911 the wooden superstructure on the upper guard was removed and the guard was given a roof made of corrugated iron . The tower was in operation as a pilot watch tower until around 1977. Then the tower fell into disrepair.

In 1999, the pilot station was first renovated by the Thiessow spa administration and the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve . The work was carried out by employees of the biosphere reserve, the spa administration made the material available. The missing windows and the missing door were replaced, the damaged plaster and the leaky roof renewed. New gutters were also added. The building's field stone plinth was exposed and isolated. The work was carried out in accordance with the listed buildings . Inside the work, an originally existing light blue paint could be found, which is also mentioned in older records. When redesigning the small interior, a corresponding color scheme was used again. Inside, an exhibition on pilotage was set up in Thiessow and the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve. The opening of the renovated pilot watch took place in April 2000.

In 2003 the tower was rebuilt largely based on the historical models and with the support of mobile phone providers and was inaugurated on April 3, 2003. Corresponding plans had existed since the 1990s. Remnants of the old tower were still there until 2003. In 2009 the exhibition in the pilot station was revised and the interior painting was renewed.
