October 2018 ), better known under the pseudonym Jin Yong ( 金庸 , Jīn Yōng , Jyutping Gam 1 Jung 4 ), was a Chinese wuxia novelist.

Between 1955 and 1972 he wrote 14 novels and one short story. More than 100 million copies of his works have been sold worldwide and have been translated into many languages ​​such as Burmese , English , French , Indonesian , Korean , Japanese , Thai and Vietnamese . The books have also been adapted as films , television series , comics, and computer games.

Life

Cha came from an academic family with a long history. He was born in 1924, the second of seven children in Yuanhua, a large community in Haining, Zhejiang Province , during the Republic of China . He has three brothers and two sisters and was related to the poet Xu Zhimo as a maternal cousin . In 1944 he studied for a short time at what was then the " Central Political University " ( 中央 政治 大學  /  中央 政治 大学 , Zhōngyāng Zhèngzhì Dàxué ) in Chongqing , which is now based in Taipei due to the Chinese Civil War . Due to a university political incident, Cha was de-registered from the university and then worked for a while in the central library. After the end of the Pacific War he returned to his hometown and worked there as a sales representative for the newspaper “Dōngnán Rìbào” ( 東南 日報  /  东南 日报  - “literally: southeast daily newspaper ”) from Hangzhou . In 1946 he continued his studies at Soochow University and in 1947 worked as a translator for the newspaper Ta Kung Pao ( 大公報  /  大公报 , Dàgōng Bào ) in Shanghai . A year later, in 1948, after graduating from university, he was transferred to Hong Kong by the newspaper publisher Ta Kung Pao . In 1952, as a screenwriter and editor of the newspaper supplement of the Hong Kong newspaper Hsin Wan Pao ( 新 晚報  /  新 晚报 , Xīnwǎn Bào  - "New Evening Paper "), he met Chen Wentong ( 陳文 統  /  陈文 统 , Chén Wéntǒng ), a Wuxia novelist with the pseudonym Liang Yusheng , know and wrote his first novel in 1955, Shū Jiàn Ēnchóulù ( 書劍恩仇錄  /  书剑恩仇录 , English The Book and the Sword ). In 1959 Cha founded the newspaper Ming Pao with Shen Pao Sing ( 沈 寶 新  /  沈 宝 新 , Shěn Bǎoxīn , Jyutping Sam 2 Bou 2 san 1 ) and was also the newspaper's editor-in-chief.
