Louis II. De La Trémoille , also written La Trémouille , (born September 20, 1460 in Bommiers (Indre), † February 24, 1525 near Pavia ) was a member of the House of La Trémoille, a French general and grandson of Georges' de La Trémoille , the favorite of King Charles VII.

Private life

Louis was the eldest son of Louis I. de La Trémoille (1431-1483) and Marguerite d'Amboise. He inherited his father as Seigneur de La Trémoille, Vicomte de Thouars , Prince de Talmond, Comte de Guînes et de Bénon , Baron de Sully , de Craon, de Montagu, de Mauléon et de l'Ile-Bouchard, Seigneur des Iles de Ré , de Rochefort and de Marans. He also held the office of Prime Minister Chambellan du Roi . On July 28, 1484, he married Gabrielle de Bourbon, daughter of Louis' de Bourbon , with whom he had a son Charles a year later. Louis survived Charles, who fell at Marignano in 1515 . Gabrielle also died on November 30, 1516. He then married Louise de Valentinois, daughter of Cesare Borgia, who was forty years his junior .

The general

La Trémoille commanded the army of Charles VIII in Guerre folle 1488 against the Duke of Brittany in the victorious battle of St. Aubin . In 1496 he won the breakthrough of the French through Lombardy near Fornovo . Louis XII. appointed him again in 1500 as commander in chief in Italy, as which he took Milan . In 1503, however, he fought unhappily in Naples against Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar . He later participated in the battles of Novara (1513) and Marignano (1515). He also took part in the campaigns against the English in Picardy .

Louis II. De La Trémoille was killed by Spanish arquebusiers in the Battle of Pavia on February 24, 1525 . His grandson François de La Trémoille followed him as Viscount of Thouars .
