Louis Nerz , also Ludwig Nerz , born in Alois Freund , (born February 16, 1866 in Chlumetz , Böhmen ; † January 20, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor , director , dramaturge and screenwriter .

Life

The Bohemian farmer's son had his first professional experience with the kuk-Staatsbahn before he switched to acting at the age of 19. Without having had any artistic training, Louis Nerz started his career at the Budweiser City Theater in 1885 . After further stage positions in the Bohemian-Moravian province ( Pilsen , Marienbad , Reichenberg , Olmütz , Troppau ), he was brought to the Raimund Theater in Vienna in autumn 1893 . In the following year, Nerz moved to the Prague State Theater, in 1896 to Brno and another two years later to Hamburg . In 1899 Nerz returned to Vienna to take up an engagement at the Theater in der Josefstadt , to which he would be a member for many years, most recently as a director . His role subject was initially that of the adolescent lover, but over the years Louis Nerz quickly grew into the character subject.

Although already active in film before the outbreak of the First World War, Nerz only concentrated on working in front of the camera with the establishment of the Austrian Republic. After initial leading roles, however, he soon had to be content with smaller roles. In the 1920s, Nerz was primarily active as a screenwriter in film, and in this role primarily worked for the 'Pan-Film', on literary film adaptations (melodramas) as well as on voluminous material with audience favorites such as Grit Haid and Magda Sonja . His manuscript on Austria's most important contribution to expressionist cinema, the horror story of Orlac's hands, received special attention . The director there was the German Robert Wiene , for whose Viennese productions Nerz wrote the scripts several times at the end of his film career.

For the Pan movie was Mink, who is also on the board of the Austrian film federal sat, also as artistic director and playwright active. The Jew Freund / Nerz died two months before the annexation of his home country by National Socialist Germany.
