The Louis Vuitton Cup has been the qualifying event for the challenger teams for the America's Cup , a prestigious international sailing regatta event that has been held since 1851 , since 1983 .

The sponsor , the fashion brand Louis Vuitton , was the namesake of the qualifying regatta from 1983 to 2007. In 2007 Louis Vuitton temporarily stopped sponsoring due to discrepancies. With a view to the 34th America's Cup in San Francisco in September 2013, Louis Vuitton announced in November 2010 that it would resume sponsorship activities for the Louis Vuitton Cup as an official qualifying regatta.

history

Until 1970, only British teams challenged US sailors in defense of the America's Cup. In 1983 the sponsor "Louis Vuitton" offered for the first time to gather the international challengers of the America's Cup in an elimination regatta and to reward the winner with the trophy "Louis Vuitton Cup". The cup was based on an idea by the French sailor Bruno Troublé .

Since the America's Cup in the strict sense of the word is only the race of the challenger against the defending champion, the actual challenger is determined from the list of applicants for qualification. Since the America's Cup is a match race event, the Louis Vuitton Cup has three series of “everyone against everyone” (Round Robin) - the so-called acts - which are weighted differently. The best point is then the current challenger.

The first "Louis Vuitton Cup" was held in 1983. The Australian yacht Australia II won the Cup and with it the right to fight for the America's Cup against the American defender of the New York Yacht Club , the Liberty . Here, too, Australia II won and was able to win the America's Cup trophy for the first time as a non-American yacht.

Situation after 2004

Because of the high number of challengers, the regatta organization was changed after the 31st America's Cup . The "Louis Vuitton Cup" was now carried out in two phases:

  • first phase: round robin round with scoring
  • second phase: semi-finals with the first four teams, followed by a final between the two best teams

Since 2004, the “Louis Vuitton Cup” has consisted of 13 “Acts of competition”, or “Acts” for short. The first three acts did not count towards the points account of the leaderboard. Some teams do not enter the elimination races at the start of the acts. The rules of the races from 2005 to 2007 stipulate that the ranking points achieved in each act increase the closer you get to the final. The 2005 Acts awarded the standard points. With 11 participants this is 11 points for a victory in the end and fewer points for the placed teams according to their rank. In the acts of 2006 there were double the number of points: 22 ranking points for the winner and corresponding points for those placed. The acts of 2007 awarded three times the number of points: 33 ranking points for the winner.

Due to the high number of races and fierce competition, winning the Challenger's Cup was much more difficult than the America's Cup itself during the last event. While there were a number of very close races in the challenger series, Team New Zealand was later clearly beaten.

A list of the participants can be found in the America's Cup article .

Withdrawal of the sponsor in 2007

On July 13, 2007, Louis Vuitton announced the end of its nearly 25-year sponsorship activities with respect to the Cup. The reason given was the increasing commercialization of the regatta under the leadership of Team Alinghi . This is no longer compatible with the company's image and values. Louis Vuitton announced at the same time that the development of the America's Cup would be followed and that a return as a sponsor could not be ruled out.

Louis Vuitton Pacific Series

In January 2009, on the initiative of Louis Vuitton and against the background of legal disputes over the 33rd America's Cup, the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series took place as a "return to racing in a spirit of friendship" in Auckland , in which ten America's Cup teams took part and Team New Zealand emerged victorious.

The Louis Vuitton company left it open until 2010 whether it would be available again as a sponsor for the Louis Vuitton Cup , which was last held in 2007, on the occasion of the 34th America's Cup .

Louis Vuitton Cup 2013

In November 2010, Louis Vuitton announced that it would be available again as a sponsor of the Louis Vuitton Cup at the 34th America's Cup, which will be hosted by BMW Oracle in San Francisco in 2013.
