history
The name Lubec is the English form of the German Lübeck . The place was founded in 1780 and was until June 21, 1811 part of Eastport (Maine) . After the establishment of the USA, the place developed into a center of smuggling, which benefited from the price difference between the USA, Canada and Europe. In 1859 the place had a tannery, three flour mills, nine sawmills and had about 2800 inhabitants. In 1886 there were two shipyards, three shipbuilders and three sailmakers . One of the most important cases of white-collar crime of the late 19th century is also connected with Lubec - from 1896 to 1898 shares in the Electrolytic Marine Salts Company , which wanted to extract gold from seawater using accumulators , were sold on a large scale .
