Luc Courchetet d'Esnans (often referred to as Lucien Courchetet , born June 24, 1695 in Besançon , † April 2, 1776 in Paris ) was a French lawyer and agent of the Hanseatic cities at the French court.

Life

Courchetet came from a family that had produced several lawyers. In his youth he initially intended to enter the Jesuit order, but then decided to study law , which he graduated with honors. After a few years as a pleading lawyer in court, he went to Paris, where he worked as a lawyer at the Paris Parliament and, thanks to the protection of Minister Germain Louis Chauvelin, held various high-ranking offices, including that of royal censor .

After the death of the previous agent of the Hanseatic cities, Antoine Poille , in December 1729, Jean-Baptiste Poussin , the French ambassador in Hamburg , suggested Courchetet as successor to the Hanseatic cities and was supported by Chauvelin. Hamburg, Lübeck and Bremen accepted this proposal after initial reservations about placing their trust in a protégé, so that Courchetet could still be accredited at the court of Versailles in January 1730. As the Hanseatic envoy , he was the official diplomatic representative of Lübeck, Hamburg and Bremen to the government of France and was primarily responsible for matters relating to the existing trade agreements between France and the three cities. In addition, he performed consular duties for citizens of the Hanseatic cities in France . Courchetet represented the three cities diplomatically at the court of Versailles until his death in 1776 , whereby in 1774 he had Louis d'Hugier , his nephew and later successor, accredited as a representative and was no longer active himself.

In addition to his work as a civil servant , lawyer and diplomat, Courchetet appeared as the author of several historical , biographical and philosophical works.
