Luciano Javier Avila

Luciano Javier Ávila (born March 26, 1965 in Realicó , La Pampa province ) is an Argentine herpetologist and biologist . His research focus is on reptiles in southern South America .

Life

Ávila received a Licenciado in Life Sciences from the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto (UNRC) in March 1990 . In April 1996 he received his Ph.D. from the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (UNT). PhD in life sciences with a focus on zoology . From 1997 to 1998 he conducted research as a domestic postdoc at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto and from 2000 to 2004 as a postdoc abroad at the Chair of Integrative Biology at Brigham Young University in Provo , Utah , USA .

Ávila was a research fellow and fellow in the Secretariat for Science and Technology at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto, fellow at the Consejo de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de la Provincia de Córdoba (CONICOR, Council for Scientific and Technological Research of the Province of Cordoba). At the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET, National Council for Scientific and Technological Research) he received a training grant as well as an internal and external postdoc grant.

Ávila has been a scientific member since 1998 and an independent researcher at CONICET since 2010. He has also edited reports on specialist congresses in Argentina , Brazil , Uruguay , Chile , Venezuela and the United States .

Ávila's interests focus on the taxonomy , systematics , phylogeny , evolution , ecology , nature conservation , biological inventories and biogeography of South American reptiles, with a special focus on Patagonian lizards. He was involved in the first descriptions of over 20 reptile species, including from the genera Homonata , Liolaemus , Phymaturus and Teius . His area of ​​responsibility includes basic research, postgraduate teaching, advising and evaluating undergraduate and graduate students, curating herpetological collections, managing his scientific research projects, evaluating applications for research projects and scientific research positions, basic biological surveys for private oil - and mining companies and biodiversity surveys .

Ávila has been married to Mariana Mirando since 1997. He has been the father of a son since 2003.
