The islands that I'm stranded on

The islands on which I am stranded , published in spring 2012, is Deprijck's first literary publication that received a broad public reception. It consists of eighteen stories, each with a first-person narrator stranded on very different islands under very different circumstances. The first, shortest story consists of only a few sentences and is set on a bare rocky reef on which the narrator starves to death after a few days. Other stories, ten or more pages long, deal, among other things, with the exploration of the respective island, the search for food, the confrontation with other stranded people or the possibility of leaving the place. A narrator gets stranded in Mallorca and becomes a tourist attraction in the nearby hotel, one manages to save a little girl who is also stranded. Each story offers its own variation on the theme and differs from the others in the type of island, the narrator's point of view, the dangerousness of the situation, etc.

reception

Numerous reviews of the book appeared in newspapers and on the Internet:

"Deprijck's book contains variations of a literary topos that allow the author not only to invent an island and the experience of the stranded person, but to play through the topic in a very varied way." ( Bayern 2 , April 17, 2012)

"The islands, which range from tropical paradise to barren small rocks, are just as varied as the situations and the ends of the beach themselves." (Hafencity-Zeitung Hamburg, April 16, 2012)

“Nightmares, adventures, absurdities. There is no more beautiful beach. "(ZDF, Das Blaue Sofa , broadcast on March 30, 2012)

"The whole beautifully designed book is also a game of numbers and times, a mysteriously nested composition of powerful images, which are congenially reflected in the equally artistic fine illustrations by Christian Schneider." ( Deutschlandradio Kultur , April 25, 2012)

One last day of infinity

The novel was published in spring 2015 and covers one day of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's stay in Zurich . On July 30, 1750, some young Zurich scholars and friends of Klopstock organized a pleasure trip on Lake Zurich in his honor . Contrary to the strict mores of the time, a partner swap was staged between the men and women for the duration of the trip. Klopstock spoke from his Messiah , who deeply moved the audience in his sensitivity , and fell in love with the only seventeen year old Anna Maria Schinz. Klopstock later processed the experiences in one of his most famous odes, Der Zürchersee . The events are documented by numerous letters from the participants, upon which Deprijck builds the presentation. Aspects invented by the author are shown in the epilogue. Linguistically, the novel moves between an approach to the expression of the times and a moderate modernization. The plot is shown from changing perspectives, including Klopstocks, Schinz, Bodmers and Hirzels .
