Lucjan Trela

Lucjan Trela (born June 25, 1942 in Turbia near Stalowa Wola , † February 12, 2019 ) was a Polish boxer .

Career

Lucjan Trela started boxing with Stali Stalowa Wola in 1958 . His first coach was Ludwik Algierd. As a senior, the stout athlete weighed between 86 kg and 88 kg and was only 1.72 meters tall. That's why he always started in the heavyweight division throughout his career, but was usually the smallest and one of the lightest boxers in this weight class. Above all, he always had to overcome the greater range of his opponents, which he often succeeded in doing with his fighter heart.

In 1960 Lucjan Trela became Polish junior heavyweight champion. Even in the years from 1961 to 1965 he mostly managed to place himself in the front of the field at the Polish championship. In 1962, 1965, 1974 and 1975 he took 3rd place each. In 1966 he was the first Polish heavyweight champion by winning points over Zbigniew Gugniewicz. He repeated this title win in 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1971 with victories against Tadeusz Kubacki , Ludwik Denderys (twice) and Janusz Gerlecki.

The legendary Polish national coach Feliks Stamm also used Lucjan Trela in three international championships. In 1967 he started at the European Championships in Rome and lost there after a victory over Dennis Avoth from Wales by breaking off in the 3rd round against the eventual European champion Mario Baruzzi from Italy on points. He came in 5th place together with three other boxers.

In 1968 he was also used at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . He met George Foreman from the United States in the preliminary round . Foreman was 1.92 meters tall, 20 cm taller than Lucjan Trela and weighed around 15 kg more. Nevertheless, Trela managed to keep Foreman busy during the whole fight with his agility, he hardly let himself be hit by his hard blows. The judges finally gave Foreman the point victory, but with 4: 1 judges' votes he was not unanimous.

In 1973 Lucjan Trela was used again at the European Championships in Belgrade . He won there in the round of 16 over Hennie Toonen from the Netherlands on points, but was clearly defeated on points in the quarter-finals against the German "giant" Peter Hussing . He came in 5th place again.

Lucjan Trela also often represented Poland in the then very popular international fights. He won it u. a. twice about Peter Hussing, who is at the beginning of his career, on points. But he also won over the very good boxers Dieter Limant , Karl Degenhardt , Bernd Anders , Jürgen Fanghänel and Jürgen Schlegel from the GDR and Ion Alexe from Romania . He had to accept defeats from Horst Koschemann and Dieter Renz from the Federal Republic of Germany, among others .

Lucjan Trela ended his career as a boxer in 1976. He had contested a total of 275 fights, of which 220 won, lost 44 and boxed eleven times in a draw.

Until 2013 he worked for a symbolic salary of 1000 zloty (250 euros) as a trainer in the Warsaw boxing club Feniks, which he co-founded. Since then he has lived, as the Polish sports press found, "forgotten and in poverty".
