Ludolph Hermann Tobiesen (born September 14, 1771 in Husum ; † May 3, 1839 in Kronstadt ) was a German mathematician, navigation teacher, author and translator.

Live and act

Ludolph Hermann Tobiesen was a son of Martin (Marten) Tobiesen (baptized on September 28, 1738 in Husum; † June 1, 1816 there) and his wife Elsabe, née Heeper (baptized on April 16, 1742 in Husum; † January 19 1816 ibid). His father worked as a ship's captain and later as a merchant. The mother was a daughter of Ludolph Hermann Heeper from Husum.

Tobiesen attended the Husum School of Academics until Easter 1791 . From the summer semester of 1791 he studied mathematics at the University of Göttingen . In June 1793 he finished his studies with the doctorate to Dr. phil. with the treatise De principiis atque historia inventionis calculi differentialis et integralis nec non methodi fluxionum commentatio .

From 1794 at the latest, Tobiesen worked as a private lecturer at the University of Copenhagen . In the winter semester of 1794/95 he gave lectures on analysis and the mathematical basics of navigation . In the following summer semester he taught as “mag. art. ”The basics of differential calculus and“ political arithmetic ”. No sources are available for lectures in the following winter semester. During this time he was probably already working as a teacher in Vesterbro . The educational institute there went back to the preacher Johann Rudolph Christiani . During his time in Copenhagen Tobiesen was one of the friends of the historian and lexicographer Rasmus Nyerup .

In 1796 Tobiesen lived in Husum, where he probably lived with his parents and had no job. During this time he probably traveled to England. In 1798 he moved to Hamburg and worked for a year and a half as a teacher at Johann Georg Büsch's commercial academy . In the summer semester of 1801 he taught mathematics as a private lecturer at the University of Kiel . Presumably before and afterwards he was the tutor to Count Peter Friedrich Adolf von Schmettau at Gut Ascheberg . From 1801 he owned the Marienhof lease there, from which he parted in 1815. Then he went to Altona and worked there as a mathematics teacher.

Russian noble coat of arms awarded in 1839

In 1817 Tobiesen followed a call to Danzig , where he was to set up a new navigation school as a professor of mathematics and director. Here 40 students were to be trained in theory and practice of shipping. For the theoretical part, Tobiesen wrote the Schiffahrtskunde textbook in 1820 in a systematically arranged collection of appropriately chosen examples and exercises . In 1821 Tobiesen went to Kronstadt as an astronomer for the Russian Navy and worked there in a similar way to Danzig. Here he was appointed court counselor in 1831, Russian subject in 1834 and shortly before the end of his life he was appointed councilor. Connected with this was the Russian hereditary nobility . At their own request, he and his descendants received entries in the Saint Petersburg nobility register in 1839.

Tobiesen wrote extensively after finishing his studies, probably also to improve his income. In particular, he created translations from Danish. In 1795/96 the German version of Adam Wilhelm von Hauch's Beginnings of Experimental Physics went to print in Schleswig , followed by two translations of Thomas Bugge's books . As textbooks for school lessons he published the history of the Danish Empire up to the most recent times in 1799 , the original of which came from Gustav L. Baden . In the following year, Prosaische attempts appeared , in which Tobiesen made a selection of the works of Knud Lyhne Rahbek .

Tobiesen had great success with his own works, which actually did not belong to his area of expertise: He wrote a New Danish Language Teaching for Germans , which contained a grammar, a reader and a vocabulary collection in three volumes and reached several editions. In addition, a small Danish reader was added in 1813 for the first lessons of the youth . There were also several small works from various specialist areas. During his time at Gut Ascheberg 1814 wrote Tobiesen a statement to marl . For this work on agriculture he received a prize from the Schleswig-Holstein Patriotic Society.

family

Tobiesen married Marie Margarete Kuncke (* 1779 in Kiel, † 23 September 1840 in Kronstadt) in Kiel on November 9th, or less likely on November 7th, 1801. She was a daughter of the Kiel citizen Johann Jacob Kuncke and his wife Margarethe Elisabeth Witten. From this marriage came three daughters and three sons:

  • The son Johannes Conrad (Иван Романович Тобизин, born March 25, 1808 in Altona, † November 16, 1878 in Reval ) was a Russian vice admiral and port commander of Reval.
  • The son August Friedrich (born March 18, 1810 in Marienhof near Plön , † February 28, 1885 in Helsinki ) was a Russian major general.
