action
In the summer of 1881 King Ludwig II undertook an incognito trip to Switzerland to Lake Lucerne with the Munich court actor Josef Kainz . There they move into a villa and take a boat excursion to the original locations of Schiller's Wilhelm Tell . There the actor Kainz should re-enact the corresponding scenes at the will of the king.
So that the actor can better empathize with his role, the king orders him to go on long walks. But Kainz is too tired and turns around halfway, much to the king's disappointment.
Also because Kainz begins to be more interested in the beautiful tourist Sara and so misses appointments with the king, Ludwig finally breaks off the trip and ends the friendship between him and Kainz.
The scenes of the journey are interrupted by retrospectives in which Ludwig can be seen at his numerous castles. There he deals with inventions that are supposed to transfer lightning, thunder and even rainbows from his fantasy world into reality.

The film was shown at numerous other festivals and was in the panorama of the Berlin International Film Festival .
The film was finally awarded the Zurich Film Prize , as well as 2nd prize at the Figuera da Foz film festival and was Hong Kong Critic's Choice.
