occupation

action

In the summer of 1881 King Ludwig II undertook an incognito trip to Switzerland to Lake Lucerne with the Munich court actor Josef Kainz . There they move into a villa and take a boat excursion to the original locations of Schiller's Wilhelm Tell . There the actor Kainz should re-enact the corresponding scenes at the will of the king.

So that the actor can better empathize with his role, the king orders him to go on long walks. But Kainz is too tired and turns around halfway, much to the king's disappointment.

Also because Kainz begins to be more interested in the beautiful tourist Sara and so misses appointments with the king, Ludwig finally breaks off the trip and ends the friendship between him and Kainz.

The scenes of the journey are interrupted by retrospectives in which Ludwig can be seen at his numerous castles. There he deals with inventions that are supposed to transfer lightning, thunder and even rainbows from his fantasy world into reality.

background

Helmut Berger was already seen as Ludwig II in 1972 in Luchino Visconti's film Ludwig II .

At the time of shooting, Helmut Berger was 49 years old, while King Ludwig II was only 36 at the time of the film.

criticism

“At first glance, a film with a historical perspective. However, his largely static images also point to the impossibility of equality, and Ludwig II is portrayed as a media person in a modern sense. Particularly interesting: the status of nature, which is being converted into a backdrop. Intelligent entertainment that stimulates reflection on truthfulness and the power of the media. "

“Ludwig 1881 is not only worth seeing, but also of a quiet poetic greatness [...] Fosco and Donatell Dubini succeeded through a calmly flowing rhythm to give their feature film an ironic lightness and to keep it in a timeless suspension. Your film says more and is more true than any hectic flood of images. Ludwig 1881 is a work of art. "

- Rolf Breiner in the Luzerner Zeitung .

“A high level of image and language culture, never academic, made the film in Locarno a competitive event. The creators should consider it an honor that the jury, which was primarily geared towards flat TV aesthetics, did not appreciate him. "

- Peter Claus in Berliner Zeitung .

“The German feature section celebrated the cinematic experiment. Conclusion: poetic-bizarre portrait of an eccentric "

“A poetic journey into the false imagination of the legendary crazy king, with breathtaking landscape shots of Lake Lucerne, humorous interludes by the two valets, two Bavarian Laurel & Hardy, and a beautiful awareness of how rigorous rituals prevent the reproduction of art. And of course Helmut Berger outstanding between loneliness, longing and madness. A pearl for selected arthouse cinemas. "
