Ludwig Anton Haßler (born January 7, 1755 in Vienna , † December 22, 1825 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) was a German Catholic theologian .

In 1771 he entered the order of the Augustinian Hermits at the age of 16 in his hometown Vienna after completing a philosophical education at the "high school" and was ordained a priest on October 18, 1777 . In his monastery, the Augustinian monastery at the Hofburg in Vienna , he continued his training in theology, philosophy and various western and oriental languages. After completing his studies in 1776, he taught Hebrew and philosophy himself in Vienna for a few years . On November 6, 1784 he was appointed lecturer at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in theology in the summer of the following year .

In 1786 he became a “public full professor of the oriental languages” - primarily Hebrew - as well as “the hermeneutics and exegesis of the Old Testament ” in Freiburg. He also taught Gregorian church chant at the general seminary there. However, only four years after his appointment to this city, in 1788, he gave up his academic activity again and on July 29th became pastor in Rottenburg am Neckar . Because of the uncomfortable work conditions prevailing there, he moved to Oberndorf am Neckar on July 13, 1795 . On July 9, 1802, he also took on the task of high school supervisor for the 300 schools in the Swabian-Austrian territory , which he held until 1805, when the area was divided between Baden , Württemberg and Bavaria in the Peace of Pressburg . On December 9, 1806, Haßler was elected dean of the Oberndorf regional chapter and on June 10, 1811, he was appointed to the Royal Württemberg Spiritual Council . On December 11, 1817, he finished his community service and received a position as senior vicariate in Rottenburg, where he died in 1825.

He published a book with "Exegetical hints about heavier parts of the Old Covenant", the scientific value of which is, however, assessed as low. In addition, he wrote various popular scientific writings on religious topics and works on preaching . Also worth mentioning are a collection of Christian funerary inscriptions published by him as well as annotated translations of works by the French writer François-René de Chateaubriand .
