Theodor Loesener

Ludwig Eduard Theodor Loesener (born November 23, 1865 in Berlin , † June 2, 1941 in Berlin-Steglitz ) was a German botanist . His botanical author abbreviation is “ Loes. "

Life

Theodor Loesener studied in Lausanne and at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin botany and was in Berlin in 1890 with his dissertation studies for a monograph of Aquifoliaceen to Dr. phil. PhD . After receiving his doctorate, Loesener initially worked as a private scholar because of his fortune (his father was a high school teacher for natural sciences and drawing, his mother came from a Huguenot family that ran an important gardening business in Berlin).

In 1896 he went as an assistant to the Berlin Botanical Museum , where he was appointed curator in 1904 and titular professor in 1912. His scientific focus was on the systematic processing of phanerogams . He also edited and published the plants that Eduard and Caecilie Seler had collected in Mexico and Central America. Loesener is the first to describe the holly Ilex guayusa .

On March 5, 1906, Theodor Loesener was elected a member ( registration number 3207 ) of the Leopoldina .

Theodor Loesener was also involved in local politics and worked from 1908 to 1912 as a councilor in Berlin-Steglitz.

In 1920 he retired for political reasons.

He had been married to a Swiss woman since 1891. The couple had two sons.

In his honor the plant genera Loesenera Harms from the family of legumes and Loeseneriella A.C.Sm. Named in 1941 from the spindle tree family.
