Louis I of Spain (Spanish: Luis , born August 25, 1707 in Madrid ; † August 31, 1724 ibid) came from the House of Bourbon and was King of Spain in 1724 .

Life

Louis of Spain was born as the eldest son of King Philip V of Spain and his first wife Maria Luisa Gabriella of Savoy , daughter of Duke Viktor Amadeus II of Savoy , who later became King of Sardinia.

On January 20, 1722, according to dynastic wishes, at the age of fourteen, he was married to the twelve-year-old Princess Louise Elisabeth of Orléans , daughter of the regent of France, Philip II, Duke of Orléans .

On January 15, 1724 , King Philip V abdicated and his eldest son ascended the Spanish throne as King Ludwig I. Sixteen-year-old Ludwig appointed Juan Bautista de Orendáin as the new Prime Minister, who was a close confidante of Ludwig's stepmother, Elisabetta Farnese .

Ludwig's reign lasted only seven months. The youth died of smallpox without having fathered children with Louise Elisabeth and was buried in the pantheon of the kings of the El Escorial monastery . After his death, the crown returned to his father Philip V, who let the royal widow return to France discreetly the following year. In return, they had Ludwig's half-sister Maria Anna Viktoria of Spain , who was originally the wife of King Louis XV. planned to return from France to Spain; the French court pursued new political interests.

Diplomatic move

It is still unclear why Philip V renounced the throne in 1724. He was probably expecting the death of the fourteen-year-old boy Louis XV. of France who was the last surviving legitimate descendant of King Louis XIV besides him. In this case he could have taken over the French crown as the closest relative, but the Treaty of Utrecht prohibited the union of the crowns of France and Spain in the same person.
