Ludwig Lucius
Ludwig Lucius , also Lutz or Luz (born February 9, 1577 in Basel , † June 10, 1642 ibid) was a Swiss Protestant Reformed theologian and university professor .
Life
Lucius was the son of a clergyman . He was first trained by his own father in Basel and Mulhouse . He then attended the Basel grammar school before he was enrolled at the University of Basel in 1590 . He began studying philosophy and theology, but devoted himself to other disciplines, such as mathematics, in the course of his studies . In 1592 he received the Baccalaureus degree , and in 1594 the Magister degree . He quickly got his first teaching positions at the university.
Lucius followed a call to the illustrious Durlach grammar school in 1596, but no later than 1601 . He also received a diaconate at the local church . After the death of the Baden margrave Ernst Friedrich , the Reformed theologians had to leave Durlach in 1604. Lucius came to Amberg via Heidelberg . There he was appointed vice principal of the school in 1605 . Lucius went on further study trips and came among other things to the Jesuit college in Regensburg . During this time the first foundations for his Jesuit history were laid.
Lucius refused an offer as rector to St. Gallen in 1610 and in 1611 accepted an appointment as professor of logic at the University of Basel. He remained in this office until his death. In 1619 he was a participant in the Dordrecht Synod and then went to Köthen at the invitation of Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen to help set up the grammar school there. In 1624 he was rector of the University of Basel, and he also held the office of dean at the Philosophical Faculty seven times . In 1629 he was also appointed a visitor to the Basel grammar school.
His Jesuit history (initially in the Latin version Historia Jesuitica ) was added to the index by decree of the Roman Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1646 .
