Life
Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort studied theology at the St. Sulpice seminary in Paris from 1693 to 1700 . He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1700 and was a hospital chaplain in Poitiers from 1701 to 1703 and from 1704 to 1705 . There he founded the community of the daughters of wisdom (Filles de la Sagesse) on February 2, 1703 for the care of the sick or Montfort sisters, who devoted themselves to nursing and schooling, especially for the poor. In 1705 he founded the Montfortaner religious order to promote the veneration of Mary and for the mission, which only began to expand after his death. Grignion de Montfort was a member of the third order of the Dominicans . He was attacked by Jansenist bishops and priests and from 1704 worked tirelessly as a preacher in popular missions in western France. In 1715 he founded a school for poor children in La Rochelle .
Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort was born in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. Beatified and on July 20, 1947 by Pope Pius XII. canonized .
Mariology
Especially his treatise on the perfect devotion to Mary has the Mariology affected. In it he recommends a constant renewal of the promise of baptism through complete devotion to Jesus Christ through Mary . In his work on the Holy Rosary - the wonderful mystery of conversion and salvation , he writes:
“In so far as the Rosary is composed in its essence and essence of the prayers of Jesus Christ and the angel's salute, namely the Our Father and the Ave Maria, and from the contemplation of the mysteries of Jesus and Mary, this is undoubtedly the first prayer and the first prayer of the believers. "
Examples of his influence are the Legio Mariae and Pope John Paul II , who revered Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort very much and chose Totus tuus ("All yours") as his coat of arms . In his Marian encyclical Redemptoris Mater (1987), John Paul writes: “In this context, among the many witnesses and masters of such a spirituality, I like to remember the figure of St. Ludwig-Maria Grignion von Montfort, who gave Christians the consecration to Christ recommended the hands of Mary as an effective means of faithfully living baptismal commitments ”(no. 48).
In the Archdiocese of Cologne , the parish church of St. Ludwig Maria Grignion von Montfort is dedicated to the saint . The name of the new religious movement of the Marienkinder derives from one of his spiritual writings.
