Ludwig Philipp Thümmig (born May 12, 1697 in Helmbrechts , † April 15, 1728 in Kassel ) was a German professor of philosophy and a follower of Christian Wolff .

Life

Ludwig Philipp Thümmig was the son of Georg Peter Thümmig, the pastor of Helmbrechts and later subdeacon of Kulmbach . He received his education at the Lyceum in Kulmbach, the Princely School in Heilbronn and from 1717 at the University of Halle . There he attended lectures at the Philosophical Faculty, especially on mathematics and physics, where he drew the attention of the polymath Christian Wolff, through whose support he rose to full professor and in 1721 became a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences . When Wolff had to leave the University of Halle within 48 hours on the decree of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I and fled to Marburg in 1723 , Thümmig followed his teacher and on his recommendation received a professorship for philosophy at the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel in 1724 . His lively literary activity culminated in the two-volume presentation of the teachings of Christian Wolff under the title "Institutiones philosophiae Wolfianae". Thümmig died in Kassel at the age of 30.
