Georg Wolfgang Augustin Fikenscher (born August 28, 1773 in Bayreuth ; † September 4, 1813 there ) was a German high school professor and historian .

Life

Georg Wolfgang Augustin Fikenscher, son of Johann Thomas Fikenscher and his wife Johann Jakobina (née Wanderer), grew up in Bayreuth and attended the humanistic grammar school there . From 1792 he studied historical sciences at the University of Erlangen with Johann Georg Meusel . After graduating, he taught from 1795 to 1796 as an associate professor at the humanistic grammar school in Erlangen . From March 17 to May 18, 1796 he also served as secretary ( Amanuensis ) of the University Library Erlangen . He was a full member of the Royal (Prussian) Institute of Morals and Fine Sciences in Erlangen, the Churmainzer Academy of Useful Sciences in Erfurt and an honorary member of the Latin Society in Altdorf

In August 1796 he began his work as rector , then as high school professor at the Lyceum in Kulmbach . On October 3, 1796, he married Katharina Magdalena Isabella Harleß, daughter of the Erlangen professor of poetry and senior librarian of the university library Gottlieb Christoph Harleß . From 1803 until his death in 1813 he taught at the humanistic grammar school in Bayreuth as a grammar school professor for history and theology .

Fikenscher wrote numerous papers on the history, topography and statistics of the Margraviate of Ansbach and Bayreuth , on intellectual life in Franconia , on the University of Erlangen and other Franconian educational institutions, on the history of individual abbeys and crafts and, last but not least, the biography of the alleged gold maker Christian Wilhelm von Krohnemann . Especially in his two biographical lexicon series Gelehrtes Fürstenthum Baireuth (Erlangen and Nuremberg 1801 to 1804), which were strongly influenced by Johann Georg Meusel, and the Complete Academic Scholarly History of the Royal Prussian Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen (Erlangen 1796) with its thousands of biographies are for research Indispensable reference works for opening up the literary and intellectual world of Franconia up to the end of the 18th century as well as the early history of the University of Erlangen. After his death, an extensive collection of academic speeches , dissertations , individual works on mostly Franconian topics and school programs went to the Erlangen University Library.
