Ludwig Gustav Wilhelm Scheuermann (born October 18, 1859 in Burghersdorp , South Africa , † September 1, 1911 in Herrsching am Ammersee ) was a German painter .

Life

Scheuermann came from an Augsburg merchant family. His parents married in Augsburg in 1858 and then emigrated to South Africa, where they worked as merchants. After the death of her father, the mother returned to her Swabian homeland with her two sons. Scheuermann was two years old when he returned. There in Augsburg he attended Latin school and completed his school days in grammar school.

On October 13, 1879, at the age of twenty, he enrolled in the class of antiquities at the Munich Art Academy . He was a student of professors Gyula Benczúr , Ludwig von Löfftz and Alexander Strähuber , finished his art studies in 1883 and was able to spend a year in Paris - supported by his teachers . There he studied at the Académie Julian .

After a few years of traveling, Scheuermann returned to Germany. On June 18, 1887, he married Désirée Stolberg from Riga. Son Erich was born on November 4, 1888, and daughter Gertraud on December 3, 1889. He was an extremely successful rural genre painter in his time , who achieved considerable prosperity with his art. In 1888 he acquired the area of today's spa park in Herrsching am Ammersee and had the building contractor and master carpenter Benedikt Rehm - at that time also mayor of the community - build a spacious villa on the lakeshore where he celebrated artist festivals with his friends every summer. Scheuermann himself made the design for his villa with echoes of Italian aristocratic palaces. The variety of shapes and style elements of the representative country house can be attributed to historicism .

On November 2, 1905, his marriage was divorced after 18 years. Ludwig Scheuermann died on September 1, 1911 in Herrsching am Ammersee at the age of almost 52. He is buried with other family members in the cemetery of the Martinskirche in Herrsching. In 1934 the house, which was initially bequeathed to his son and later called Kurparkschlössl , became the property of the community. Today it is the seat of the Herrsching Adult Education Center and hosts exhibitions.
