Ludwig Schmitz (judge)

Ludwig Schmitz (born March 26, 1845 in Heinsberg ; † May 26, 1917 in Aachen ) was a German district court president and politician.

Live and act

The son of the merchant and landowner Reiner Schmitz († 1860) and Franziska Cobillon completed a law degree after leaving school. During his studies he became a member of the AV Austria Innsbruck in the CV in 1865 . In the meantime he served as a volunteer in the Landwehr of the 25th Combined Infantry Regiment, later the 5th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 65, and took part in the 1870/71 campaign in France . Schmitz acquired EK II and was later released as captain of the reserve. About this time he wrote the book: From the campaign 1870/71 - diary sheets of a 65s , which was published between 1902 and 1912 in three editions.

Schmitz began his legal civil service career as a court assistant in 1874 and was transferred to St. Vith as a justice of the peace a year later . In 1879 he moved to the district court of Erkelenz as a district judge and was promoted to the district judge in 1888. In 1894 he took over the office of district court director at the district court of Düsseldorf and at the same time chaired the arbitration tribunal of the invalidity and old age insurance institute and various professional associations. In 1903 Schmitz was transferred to Landsberg an der Warthe , where he was appointed president of the regional court, but three years later he was able to transfer to the regional court in Aachen in the same position , where he was appointed secret senior justice council in 1910. In 1903 it was still a personnel policy to promote Catholic judges and judges associated with the center only in the Protestant regions of Prussia. Schmitz held the office of district court president until his death in 1917.

In addition to his professional career, Schmitz worked as a politician for the Center Party and sat for them from 1893 to 1894 and from 1899 to 1903 in the Prussian House of Representatives . In addition, he joined the Aachen History Association in Aachen and headed it from 1907 to 1910. With one of his first official acts on December 10th, 1907, he reunited and took over the "Association for Customers of Aachen Prehistoric Times", which emerged in 1885 most of the existing board members in the newly established overall association. In addition, Schmitz was president of the Karlsverein for the restoration of the Aachen Cathedral and a member of the Club Aachener Casino .

For his services, Schmitz was awarded the 4th Class Red Eagle Order in 1902 , the 3rd Class Royal Crown Order in 1907 and the 3rd Class Red Eagle Order in 1911.
