Ceramic mural in Meissen

Detail from the mural "Wedding at Cana" in Meissen

In 1966, Ludwig Zepner and Karlheinz Schäfer created the ceramic mural "Hochzeit zu Kana" from shaped and colored ceramic elements for the Kolping House of the Catholic parish of St. Benno (Meißen) . The design comes from Karlheinz Schäfer, the execution was carried out by Ludwig Zepner. The mural is located in the Triebischtal (Meißen) district at Haus Hirschbergstrasse 7. When the Elbe and Triebisch floods in 2002, the building was badly damaged and has been empty since then. The preservation of the mural is at risk, as the picture itself is on the facade of a badly damaged building.

Until the end of the 1990s, the building was still owned by the parish. After frequent changes of homeowner, the current owner is unknown. According to the responsible building authority, neither the building nor the mural is included in the list of cultural monuments. The artist Karlheinz Schäfer, the parish of St. Benno in Meißen and other ceramic art lovers are currently committed to preserving the mural.

invention

For the first time in the world, Zepner succeeded in developing the ceramic pipe shape through its manufacturing process, controlling the changes in the drying and firing process and thus producing tunable pipes for the first porcelain organ.
