Luigi I. Gonzaga (also Ludovico I. Gonzaga ) (* 1267 , † January 18, 1360 ) from the Gonzaga dynasty had been city lord of Mantua since the assassination of Rinaldo dei Bonacolsi in 1328. The following year, Emperor Ludwig IV made him 1329 as imperial vicar of Mantua.

origin

Ludovico I came from the house of the Gonzaga , an old noble family in Lombardy that dates back to the 12th century, originally Corradi, then after their fief Gonzaga called "Corradi di Gonzaga" and finally just Gonzaga.

Ludovico was a grandson of Antonio Corradi († 1283 in Mantua), who in 1259 was one of the "Anziani del Popolo" (roughly: city council) of Mantua and was married to the wealthy heiress Richilde Pedroni, who brought large parts of the Gonzaga rule into marriage who gave their name to the Gonzaga family and formed the basis for the rise of one of the most famous and powerful families in Italy. It is located on the southern border of the province of Mantua and is about 29 km from Mantua and 34 km from Reggio nell'Emilia .

His father was Guido (also called Corrado) Corradi da Gonzaga († 1318 in Mantua), a wealthy landowner who in 1287 obtained the enfeoffment of the castle and dominion of Gonzaga from the Benedictine monastery of San Benedetto di Polirone . Ludovico's mother was a daughter of Strambino di San Martino, Lord of San Martino dall'Argine (about 31 kilometers southwest of Mantua on the Oglio River).

Ludovico Gonzaga married Richilda Ramberti (* 1269, † 1319) from Brescia , a daughter of Condottiere Ramberto Ramberti, Podestà of Modena , in his second marriage Caterina Malatesta († 1340), a daughter of Pandolfo I.
