Luis-Enrique Herrera (born August 27, 1971 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican tennis player .

Life

Herrera won several national Mexican youth titles and was ranked 9th in the junior world rankings in 1988. In 1989 he was with Mark Knowles in the double finals of the junior tournament of the French Open . After playing on the ATP Challenger Tour in 1988 and winning the doubles competition of the San Luis Potosí Challenger, he became a professional tennis player in 1989. He was able to defend his double title, the following year he failed at the side of Guillermo Pérez Roldán in the final. However, he achieved individual titles at the Challenger tournaments in Manaus and Ilhéus . 1992 was his most successful year, he reached the final of an ATP tournament for the first and only time in Armação dos Búzios , but lost to Jaime Oncins . On the Challenger Tour he won the singles titles in São Paulo , Ixtapa and Pontevedra and for the third time the doubles competition in San Luis Potosí.

After shoulder surgery, he could not participate in the game for a long time in 1994, but again reached the double finals in San Luis Potosí. In 1993 and 1994 he was also in the individual finals of the tournament, but lost in three sets against Horst Skoff and Nicolás Pereira . In 1997 he played his first and only double-final on the ATP World Tour alongside Mariano Sánchez in his hometown . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1992 with position 49 in singles and in 1989 with position 117 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of Wimbledon in 1992. In the doubles competition, he advanced once into the third round of the French Open.

Herrera played 36 singles and four doubles games for the Mexican Davis Cup team between 1990 and 1999 . His greatest successes with the team were the first round participation in the world group in 1991 and 1997. In the close 2-3 defeat against the USA he was able to win his individual against Jim Courier , the second game against Brad Gilbert was lost in just five sets. After the first round off against Italy in 1997 , Mexico met Germany in the relegation . Herrera clearly lost his singles against Boris Becker and Jens Knippschild in three sets.
