Luisa Valenzuela (born November 26, 1938 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Argentine writer and journalist.

Life

Luisa Valenzuela was born on November 26, 1938 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to the writer Luisa Mercedes Levinson and a doctor. Authors such as Adolfo Bioy Casares , Jorge Luis Borges and Ernesto Sábato went to and from her mother's house . Although she was more drawn to the natural sciences as a child, at the age of 17 she began to publish in various magazines, such as Atlántida , El Hogar , Esto Es , and also worked for Radio Belgrano. When she was twenty, shortly after marrying a French businessman, she settled in Paris , where she worked for Radio Télévision Française and met members of the Tel Quel group and the " Nouveau Roman " group. There she also wrote her first novel Hay que sonreír . In 1958 their daughter Anna-Lisa was born. In 1961 she returned to her home country to work for the daily newspaper La Nación and for the magazine Crisis . In 1965 she divorced her husband. In 1967/68 she undertook extensive trips through Bolivia, Peru and Brazil on behalf of La Nación .

In 1969 she received a Fulbright scholarship to the University of Iowa , where she wrote another novel, El gato eficaz, in the International Writers' Program . Between 1972 and 1974 she lived alternately in Mexico , Paris and Barcelona , with a short stay in New York City , where she was a scholarship holder of the Argentine Fondo Nacional de las Artes.

In the course of the tightening military dictatorship (the so-called Proceso de Reorganización Nacional ) in Argentina, the censorship of which fell victim to part of her novel Como en la guerra (she had to delete a scene of torture), she went to the USA in 1979 , where she did the next 10 Years spent. Her collection of stories Cambio de armas (Weapons Exchange) also appeared there, as did her novel Cola de lagartija , the main character of which is the former interior minister of Isabel Perón , José López Rega .

Luisa Valenzuela worked as "Distinguished Writer in Residence" at the Center for Inter-American Relations and at the City University of New York and Columbia University , where she was head of a literary writing workshop for ten years. She has also lectured and held courses at Northwestern University , the University of Wisconsin, and the Pan American Society of New England. She becomes a Fellow of the Institute for the Humanities of New York University, Member of Fund for Free Expression, and Member of Freedom to Write Committee of PEN American Center. In 1983 she received a Guggenheim scholarship. After a short visit to her home country in 1983 (after the re-establishment of democracy), she finally returned to Buenos Aires in 1989, where she finished her novels Realidad nacional desde la cama (actually a commissioned work for the theater) and Novela negra con argentinos .

In 2001 the Cuban Casa de las Américas in Havana dedicated a week-long symposium to her. In 2002 a conference on Luisa Valenzuela's literary work was held at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA). In November 2008, a symposium was held at the University of Vienna on her 70th birthday , attended by international experts. She currently (2008) lives in Buenos Aires, where she works as a journalist.
