biography

Jaretz grew up in the Bregenz Forest and after the end of the Second World War went to the Montafon with her family . She had already started skiing during the war. After good performance in the youth field and her first starts abroad, she joined the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) in 1950 . Jaretz celebrated his first victories in international FIS races in 1951 in the downhill runs from Planica and the Šar-Planina Cup. In 1952 she was twice successful in Switzerland when she won the downhill runs of the Gamperney Derby in Grabs and the Gornergrat Derby in Zermatt . Jaretz was also victorious on Gornergrat in 1953 when she won downhill and slalom. In addition, she won a giant slalom in Seefeld , while she was second in the giant slalom in Bad Gastein .

Early in the season 1953/1954 to Jaretz (third place in the combination of assured with good results in the internationally staffed most races Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel and fourth rank in the departure of the SDS race in Grindelwald ) to compete at the 1954 World Cup in Swedish Åre . Shortly before the start of this World Championship, she celebrated her first win of the season in the downhill run of the Holmenkollen-Kandahar races in Oppdal . At the World Championships Jaretz was fifth in the downhill (at the same time as the Swiss Madeleine Berthod ) and in the giant slalom (as the best Austrian). In the final slalom she only came in 30th after a fall, which meant that she missed the chance of a top spot in the combination. In the further course of the season Jaretz achieved further victories, including again in the downhill of the Gornergrat derby and in the Blauherd downhill, also held in Zermatt. At the Arlberg-Kandahar races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she achieved third place in the combination.

Jaretz achieved several victories and podium places in the winter of 1954/1955. In Zermatt, she won the Gornergrat descent for the fourth time in a row (including the combination for the first time) and the Blauherd descent for the second time. She achieved further victories in the descent from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains , in slalom, giant slalom and combination in the Vall de Núria and in two giant slaloms on Lake Zürs and in Arosa . At the Arlberg-Kandahar races, this time held in Mürren , she again achieved a podium finish in third place on the downhill. In addition, she was second in slalom and combination of the Austrian championships in 1955 on the Hirschenkogel , after having been third in downhill in the national championships in the last two years.

In November 1955 Jaretz had a bad fall while training the Austrian women's team for the 1956 Winter Olympics . She fractured her tibia and fibula and had to take a break for the rest of the winter. In the 1956/1957 season Jaretz took part in races again, where she achieved a victory in the giant slalom of Arosa and two other podium places. A pregnancy and the birth of her son in late 1957 marked the end of her active career.
