Railway stations in Saarland

The Luisenthal (Saar) Station located in Luisenthal at the Saar Railway between Burbach and Völklingen and opened. 1858 The connection built ten years after the first line was built in Saarland is one of the oldest. The outside of the station building was not changed and is one of the oldest in Saarland.

The oversized red brick building was intended to convey the miners to the nearby Luisenthal mine when it was erected . The few hundred inhabitants that Luisenthal had at that time would not have justified this size of the station. The railway line running roughly in an east-west direction provided a railway building with the same orientation, which lies between the railway line and the town. To the west and south of the building there is a small forecourt with an old tree population. The significantly smaller streams of travelers today make the building appear less busy. Overall, it looks neglected. There have been no significant modernizations in the last few decades. It has the station category  6.

architecture

The station system was designed for high frequency. The rectangular building with a central risalit and an easterly corner risalit has two floors to the west of the centrally located main entrance with counter hall, and only one floor to the south. An exit from the hall led directly to the house platform , which is no longer used today , a right-hand three- flight staircase under the counter hall and from there to the other two platforms, of which only the first (covered) platform is used today. The lower hall is also reached by a covered external staircase that lies between two staircases that lead into the counter hall. To the east of the counter hall were the waiting rooms, which later housed the restaurant, to the west were the counters and service rooms and the stairs to the upper floor, which were not open to the public.

The exposed brick building with a steep, slate hipped roof is structured with its sill cornices on both floors . The windows are framed with light stone and are more finely chiseled on the ground floor than on the first floor. The two central projections on the street and the track side each have a four-stepped stepped gable with a triangular end.

The style of the building is reminiscent of North German brick Gothic due to the lack of classical or neoclassical forms typical of the time, as well as the building materials used and, above all, the style-defining stair gable . This design is rather rare at train stations, especially outside of northern Germany. This North German and Lower Rhine influence is likely to be due to the style of the architect and student of Conrad Wilhelm Hase - Franz Ewerbeck - who preferred brick as a building material. The station is most reminiscent of the old station in Aachen , which also has different building parts of different heights and a steep hipped roof. In the neo-Gothic style, with almost identical twin windows, the signature of the same architect can be seen here.

business

The station belongs to the Saarland Transport Association and is located in the large honeycomb 191, which covers the entire urban area of Völklingen. The next more important train stations are in Saarbrücken and Völklingen . The station is now only served by regional trains in regular intervals:

Structural condition of track 1

The RB71 line runs to the station every half hour between St. Ingbert and Dillingen , while trains run every hour on the remaining section.

The extensive track fields belonging to the station are now largely inoperative or have already been dismantled when the pit was closed. To the west of the reception building was the goods handling area with a goods shed and two loading ramps. To the north of the track there were three loading tracks for the loading of coal in the immediately adjacent mine area. There were several sidings in between .
