Liutold from Eppenstein
Liutold von Eppenstein , also Luitpold von Eppenstein , (* around 1050; † May 12, 1090 ) was Duke of Carinthia and Margrave of Verona from 1077 to 1090 .
Life
He was a son of Count Markwart IV of Eppenstein and the Liutbirg von Plain , daughter of Count Liutold II.
In the succession of his father, who remained the ruling power in Carinthia even after the deposition of Duke Adalbero , his grandfather, Liutold succeeded in 1076/77 with the deposition of Zähringer Berthold by King Heinrich IV. , But in a circumcised duchy: There were were spun off: Friuli (to Patriarch Sieghard von Aquileia , † 1077), Istria (came back to Liutold after Sieghard's death) and Carniola (also to Aquileia, some time later) and also the Kärntnermark (to the Otakare). The Verona mark was retained by Liutold.
The elevation of Liutold took place after Heinrich IV's Canossagang and after the election of the opposing king Rudolf von Rheinfelden , since the king was escorted by his loyal partisan Liutold through the rugged bottlenecks of Carantania , probably over the Predilpass and through the Gailitztal , back into the empire . Liutold was also at Henry IV's side on the later Rome trains.
The interaction with his brothers Ulrich , Hermann and Heinrich worked very well and so the Eppensteiners were able to position themselves very well in the empire. Ulrich was installed as abbot of St. Gallen in 1077 and additionally as patriarch of Aquileia in 1085, Hermann in 1085 as counter-bishop of Passau , Heinrich as Vogt of Aquileia and probably 1077-1093 as margrave of Istria and (probably) Carniola.
The construction of Eppenstein Castle , after which the noble family was later named, probably fell in the second half of his term of office .
Allegedly he even became Margrave of Styria in 1086-1090 instead of Margrave Otakar, who had been deposed .
Liutold was married twice, but left no sons entitled to inherit. According to a questionable source, he died as a throneurper in 1090 and is buried in St. Lambrecht Abbey .
