Luke Christ

Lukas Christ (born October 30, 1881 in Thal , † February 1, 1958 in Weggis ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.

Life

Lukas Christ was the son of pastor Paul Christ (* 1851 in Basel ; † 1929) and his wife Anna (née Siber) (1858–1933). Christ had five siblings.

After attending grammar school at Münsterplatz in Basel, he studied theology at the University of Basel and at the University of Halle . In 1905 he finished his studies.

From 1905 to 1906 he was pastor's helper in Igis , from 1906 to 1911 pastor in Waldstatt , and from 1908 also at the cantonal psychiatric institution in Herisau .

From 1911 to 1948 he was pastor in Pratteln . During this time he took over the church administration of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in 1922 , was synodal councilor and from 1928 vice-president as well as from 1934 to 1948 president of the parish convention of Basel-Landschaft and member of the board of the Swiss Evangelical Church Federation . He worked intensively with hymns and participated in 1931-1952 in participating in the hymnal Commission.

As a theologian trainer and organizer, he shaped the Reformed Church in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. He was close friends with Eduard Thurneysen and Karl Barth and in 1934 published a "church instruction" with the title I am the Lord your God published anonymously.

Lukas Christ was married to Maria Katharina (1887–1980), daughter of the linguist Jacob Wackernagel , since 1908 . They had nine children together:

  • Balthasar Christ (* 1918 in Basel), businessman, married to Irene Berger (* 1920)
  • Ambrosius Christ (* 1921 in Basel), pharmacist, married to Dora Viret (* 1926)
  • Martin Christ (* 1923 in Basel), doctor, married to Karin Flotow (* 1930);
  • Kunigunde Christ (* 1926 in Basel), nurse
  • Dorothea Christ (* 1929 in Basel), married to Ernst Schumacher (* 1926), Dr. phil, professor
