Lukas Kundert

Lukas Kundert (born April 23, 1966 in Frenkendorf ; entitled to live in Rüti GL , Luchsingen and Glarus ) is a Swiss theologian and pastor . He is President of the Church Council of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Basel-Stadt , minister pastor in Basel and Professor at the University of Basel .

Life

Lukas Kundert grew up in Frenkendorf and studied Protestant theology in Basel and Jewish studies in Jerusalem from 1986 to 1993 . From 1994 to 1998 Kundert worked as an assistant at the theological faculty of the University of Basel and received his doctorate in 1997 at Ekkehard W. Stegemann Dr. theol. with a New Testament work on atonement theology . From 1999 to 2004 he worked as an industrial pastor in Basel. In 2004 Lukas Kundert received his habilitation with an (unpublished) thesis on New Testament apocalyptic. Since 2004 he has been President of the Church Council of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Basel-Stadt. Since 2009 he has also been minister pastor in Basel. Since 2010 he has been adjunct professor at the University of Basel.

Public work

Kundert advocates a balanced assessment of the politics of the State of Israel in the Reformed Church. He rejects the condemnation of Israel by the World Council of Churches in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In particular, he has grave reservations about the Kairos-Palestine document and the WCC's program of visits to the West Bank .

Together with the Basel theology professor Ekkehard Stegemann , he protested against the call by the Swiss Protestant Churches (HEKS) to boycott goods from Israeli settlements . In August 2013 Kundert protested against the election process to fill the chair for the New Testament at the University of Basel. He criticized the fact that reformed and habilitated Swiss candidates had been eliminated from the appointment process with inadmissible arguments.

When on February 7th, 2016 an activist group called «we stay!» occupied Basel's St. Matthew's Church as a refuge for asylum seekers with a valid return decision to Italy, Kundert commented on church asylum on SRF radio on March 3, 2016 . Among other things, he stated: “The authorities can access at any time. Church asylum does not exist de jure and de facto. " On the same day, the Migration Office and the cantonal police of Basel-City conducted a security check at the premises of the church by, and the police arrested eight people without valid papers. According to the head of the Migration Office of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, Michel Girard, the control had already been prepared at the time of the radio broadcast.
