The Lukaskirche in Münster is a Protestant church in the west of the city, close to the Coesfelder Kreuz traffic junction . Its silhouette can be seen from afar next to the university clinic buildings . Already 50 years after it was built, the Lukaskirche was registered as a monument .

Building history

After the Second World War , the number of Protestants in Münster increased due to the influx of refugees, who settled in what was then the outskirts of the city, where new parishes were then founded. The Church of the Evangelist Lukas - its full name - was built from 1960 to 1961 as a parish church for the new, at the time rapidly growing, western parish of the Apostle Church and at the same time as a clinic church for the patients of the neighboring hospitals according to plans by Heinrich Otto Vogel from Trier. The consecration was celebrated on the 1961 harvest festival.

The name of the evangelist Luke was chosen for the parish and clinic church because, according to tradition, Luke was a doctor by profession and because his gospel focuses in a special way on mercy and care for the suffering. An inscription at the church entrance says: “This church was built in the year of the Lord in 1961 as a place of worship for the western district of the evangelical parish and the university clinics. It bears the name of the evangelist and doctor Luke as a sign that it serves the healthy and the sick in the same way. "

According to the documents of the city's monument office, the entry as a monument was justified as follows: “The Lukas Church is an important testimony to the development of the Evangelical Church in Münster and as such also important for the history of the city in the period after the Second World War. "

In 2011, some cracks in the masonry were removed and it was found that the facade was in danger of collapsing. After the work has been completed, the structure and appearance almost completely correspond to the condition at the time of construction.

Church building

The church is made of brick, the shade of which characterizes its exterior and interior. The floor plan is that of an almost square hall with a wide, flat gable roof . The east side bends into a wide apse , while the west side is almost completely taken up by staggered windows with round arches. In addition, there is only one small window in the north east wall, through whose circular opening the first morning light should fall on the font . The tower consists of a relatively low, wide and round brick base with a high, covered cone tip. Overall, with its compact proportions, the exterior gives the impression of a protective castle.

Furnishing

Inside, the chancel in the apse curvature attracts everyone's attention. Only here is the brick lightly plastered.

Above the sandstone altar, a frieze of paintings shows representations from the special property of the Gospel of Luke : the Annunciation to Mary , the Good Samaritan , the healing of a blind man, the return of the prodigal son and the Easter meal in Emmaus . Above a halo with the twenty-four elders of Revelation appears Christ returning in glory , surrounded by a host of angels - strongly stylized .

organ

The organ was built in 1963 by the organ building company Gustav Steinmann (Vlotho) and extensively renovated in 2006 by the organ building company Kirschner (Weener). The instrument has 21 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.

Parish hall and rectory

The parish hall is adjacent to the church, but it is not a listed building because, according to the city of Münster, it is "not of the same architectural quality as the church". Accordingly, in 2016, consideration was given to selling the parish hall and rectory together with their land in the event that a new church center for the Lukas parish was to be built on the Gievenbeck site of the former Oxford barracks of the British armed forces in Germany . Due to the monument protection of the Lukaskirche, it should remain in its current location even after a possible church building on the former barracks area.
