Luke Aaron Bronin (born June 30, 1979 in Port Chester , New York ) is an American lawyer and politician . He is a member of the Democratic Party and has been the 67th Mayor of Hartford , the capital of Connecticut, since January 1, 2016 .

Life

Luke Bronin attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and then studied law. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University , then received a Rhodes Scholarship and went to England, where he obtained a master's degree from Balliol College , Oxford . Bronin eventually returned to the United States and graduated from Yale Law School with a Juris Doctor degree . After graduating, Luke Bronin worked for the insurance company The Hartford Financial Services Group .

Luke Bronin has been married to lawyer Sara Galvan, a professor at the University of Connecticut Law School , since 2007 and has two daughters and a son. He is a partner in the law firm Hinckley Allen & Snyder LLP.

Career

Before 2004, Luke Bronin joined the Democratic Party. In 2006, he served as the deputy leader of Dan Malloy's campaign team prior to the Connecticut gubernatorial election. During Barack Obama's first term as President of the United States, Bronin was appointed to the United States Treasury Department . There he worked as an advisor to the Deputy Finance Minister Neal S. Wolin . From September 2010 to April 2011, Bronin, who served in the United States Navy Reserve, served in the Afghan War. When he retired from the military, Luke Bronin held the status of lieutenant .

In January 2013, Luke Bronin became Head of Legal for the Connecticut State Administration under Dan Malloy. In July 2015, Bronin announced his candidacy for Hartford mayoral election that same year. Two months later, he was able to prevail against the incumbent at the time, Pedro Segarra , in an internal party primary . Bronin received support in the mayoral election from Governor Malloy and the two Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, among others . He was elected Mayor of Hartford on November 3, 2015, and took office on January 1, 2016.

In November 2017, Luke Bronin announced that he would run in Connecticut's gubernatorial election the following year. On April 16, 2018, he withdrew this announcement. On July 22, 2019, Bronin was confirmed as candidate for mayor in a primary election, which means that he will run for re-election in November 2019.
