history

Lurline

The Lurline was built by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Quincy and launched on July 18, 1932. With the Malolo , the Mariposa and the Monterey, she had three sister ships, which also reached a high seniority. The Lurline was put into service on January 15, 1933 and henceforth used for the line service from San Francisco to Honolulu . Prior to this, she completed a single cruise to New Zealand , Australia and Asia on her maiden voyage .

On December 7, 1941, the Lurline was on another crossing to Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese planes. The ship completed its voyage at top speed and was then converted into a troop transport together with its sister ships.

In 1946 the Lurline returned to the Matson Lines. After extensive conversion and renovation work, the ship was put back into service on its old route on April 15, 1948. From 1950 it was also supplemented by the also modernized Monterey , which now bore the name Matsonia . On February 3, 1963, the Lurline ended an unscheduled crossing in Los Angeles because it had suffered an engine failure. Matson therefore decided to sell the thirty year old ship.

Ellinis

The new owner was the Greek shipping company Chandris, which renamed it Ellinis and, after renovation work, put it into service on December 30, 1963 on the route from Piraeus to Sydney . From 1964, the ship's return trips ended in Southampton. The Ellinis has also been cruising around the world since the late 1960s .

In April 1974 the ship suffered engine damage while cruising off Japan and had to break off the voyage. At the same time, the sister ship Mariposa, now renamed Homeric , was scrapped in Taiwan. Chandris therefore bought one of the machines from the demolition yard and had it installed in the Ellinis . In March 1975, the ship, stationed exclusively for cruises in the Mediterranean from then on, could be put back into service.

In October 1981 the Ellinis ended her last cruise after 48 years of service and was then laid up in Greece . Plans to reactivate it or use it as a hotel ship in the Port of San Francisco were never realized. Instead, the ship set out on December 3, 1986 to cross to Taiwan, where it was supposed to be scrapped. Although the Ellinis listed off Singapore , it arrived on April 15 at the Kaohsiung demolition yard , where it was dismantled. Parts of the machinery were sent as spare parts to the sister ship Monterey , renamed Britanis , which remained in service until 1996.
