Márokföld is a Hungarian community in the county Lenti in Zala county .
Geographical location
Márokföld is about three kilometers from the border with Slovenia . The Örség National Park begins a few kilometers north of the village .
history
The place was first mentioned in the 14th century. It may have been founded in the course of the Mongol invasion of 1240. The place name goes back to the founder Mark . The place name mentioned in the first mention of 1363 was "Mark Feulde". Since the times of the Reformation in the 16th century, the inhabitants have been predominantly Protestants.
Three water mills were built on a stream early on and were in operation until the early 19th century. Remains in the form of large oak trunks can still be seen today in inaccessible places in the stream. Different landlords took turns. The last were the Eszterházy princes .
Around 1880 the village was moved a few hundred meters to a higher elevation on what was then Poststrasse, as unusual floods in the previous years had inundated it and caused great damage to people and animals. Today's Márokföld was built between the residents' vineyards. There had been a wooden house there since 1868. This year was found in a rafter of a building that has since been demolished.
At the time of the iron curtain, access to the village was only possible with a special permit.
Márokföld has had its own local council since 1990, which has consisted of three (previously four) people since 2010. The number of inhabitants fell sharply at times. In 1999 the village only had 36 inhabitants. In 2015 more than 50 residents were registered again. The reason for this are immigration from Germany, Austria and more eastern regions of Hungary.

Culture
Márokföld became known through a festival of visual artists (abolished in 2012), which was brought to life in 2006 by the sculptor Ulrich Leclerc-Szelényi, his wife Edith and artist friends such as István P. Balogh. Every first weekend in July, up to 18 artists from 7 European countries, musicians and hundreds of visitors livened up the place. Step by step, an adventure park was built on a so-called “ Ley Line ”, on the eastern edge of the village a climbing garden in natural surroundings. Márokföld benefits from its visitors thanks to the gentle tourism that makes the Örség attractive. There was also a field arch course and walking paths, paths for riders and opportunities to rest for people and animals.
