The Handschuhsheimer Mühlbach is a 6.6 km long stream in the independent city of Heidelberg and on the edge of the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg . The stream, which runs west-south-west, but stretches far to the south, rises in the Odenwald and flows from there into the Upper Rhine Plain . At the community of Dossenheim it unites with the right Dossenheimer Mühlbach to the Humpelsgraben . His Odenwald valley is called Mühltal or Siebenmühlental .

geography

course

For the first half of its course, the Handschuhsheimer Mühlbach runs through the so-called Mühltal or Siebenmühlental , which is continuously indented into the high western Odenwald level to the Rhine lowlands, which runs south-south-west for a long time, and finally westwards to the Heidelberg district of Handschuhsheim at the foot of the hill and in the subsequent lowlands. It rises near the Strangwasenhütte at the upper end of the valley between the Hoher Nistler ( 496  m above sea level ) in the southwest and the White Stone ( 548.1  m above sea level ) less than 300 meters south-east of the saddle that connects the two mountains. Seven ways at one altitude from about 420  m above sea level. NHN the Strangwasenbrunnen . This is a fountain with a stone trough, which stands on the lower left slope and is reliable even in the dry season, even if it pours less. The draining water flows under a forest path through to the deepest part of the valley and there in the forest that extends from the mountain slopes to the shore to the south-southwest.

After a good half a kilometer, it is reinforced from a small left side trough from the Hirschquelle , the drainage of which ends over the damp and herbaceous half- clearing deer meadow on the lower slope. After crossing a forest path, the valley floor begins to clear again so much further; on the right slope of the first open meadow section stands at around 275  m above sea level. NHN is the book fountain , which was restored in the 1980s or 1990s, next to a seating area, which donates plenty of water even in midsummer. Further down in this first open piece of the valley floor, in which the stream itself is followed by a wood gallery, a wooden walkway crosses it. A little further down the valley floor closes again, in the short following valley forest there are a few tiny ponds. Then the stream finally emerges from the valley forest and slowly turns to the right.

Almost on a westerly course, it passes through a retention basin above the first houses in Handschuhsheim, in front of whose earth dam a driveway crosses the valley floor, on which the Turner fountain made of local red sandstone stands on the left side of the valley . From the retention basin, where it is almost only 200  m above sea level. NHN has fallen, he runs a good hundred meters long. Then the house development starts first on the right lower slope along the Handschuhsheimer Mühltalstraße. On the following section, the many mills of the stream valley, therefore also called Siebenmühlental , used the water power of the stream; many of the mill buildings have been preserved, at the next road crossing, which now connects the right Mühltalstraße with the Heiligenbergstraße on the left slope, a damming can still be seen today.

A little below, before the Löbinggasse running across the valley, the stream now enters its long swelling through Handschuhsheim and beyond. Its course can still be recognized from the terrain profile on the first stretch up to the Handschuhsheimer Tiefburg , where it runs under the Mühltalstrasse, which now goes south, which then merges into the westward Dossenheimer Landstrasse near the former moated castle, whose moat was once fed by the stream . From here on, the course can only be seen on maps. The stream follows the route of the Dossenheimer Landstrasse first westwards, then northwards on the first section, where it is B 3 , to the north and then under the Mühlingstrasse to the northwest to the outskirts of Handschuhsheim to the gardening areas on the other side of the meadow path to the west. On the now completely flat terrain of the Upper Rhine Plain at about 110  m above sea level. NHN, he now continues north to north-west along the road along the edge of the settlement.

Almost at the northern end of the Handschuhsheimer settlement area it flows from the right of the more than two kilometers long Höllenbach , locally called "Hellenbächl", which on the western slope of the Hohe Nistler at around 330  m above sea level. NHN rises and finally also runs in the local area. The natural monument of the small silting Kroddeweiher ("Toad Pond") is located in the corner of the mouth. Under the adjoining open field, the stream continues to twist on the route of a north-western dirt road. Only after crossing under the Dossenheim feeder from the B 3 to the A 5 (L 531) does the Handschuhsheimer Mühlbach come out again. He still moves about half a kilometer on the southern boundary of the municipality and settlement of Dossenheim westwards. At the southern end of Boschstrasse in the village, it then flows with the Dossenheim namesake Mühlbach, which is last under the road from the north, at less than 109  m above sea level. NHN to Humpelsgraben together. This flows into shallow grave after a short run curve around the southwestern tip Dosse home soon to the northwest is, after crossing the district of Ladenburg there Rombach called and drained into the left branch of the pulpit Bach -Unterlaufes Losgraben .

Catchment area

The Handschuhsheimer Mühlbach has a catchment area of 7.4 km². It has a share in the southwestern sandstone Odenwald , the narrow strip of the southern mountain road and the eastern Neckar-Rhine plain of the Upper Rhine Plain . About two thirds of it are forested, they are in the east in the Odenwald and on its slopes.

From the confluence with the Dossenheimer Mühlbach east-northeast to the beginning of the summit slope of the White Stone ( 548.1  m above sea level ), the catchment area of this Dossenheim namesake lies in the north, then briefly up to the summit the drainage area of the upper Kanzelbach , over the two drains reached the Neckar at Ladenburg . On this with 548.1  m above sea level. NHN, the highest point of the catchment area, the watershed bends south and now separates it from the Ziegelhäuser Steinbach valley as far as the Einsiedlerhütte in the southern Centwald- Sporn . Then it turns to the southwest at the Neckartalabfall and climbs with the Heidelberger Heiligenberg ( 439.9  m above sea level ) the edge of the Odenwald summit; beyond that only short inlets ( Mausbach , Schweinsbächl ) also run south towards the Neckar. From the Heiligenberg the catchment area border falls steeply down to the level of the Upper Rhine Plain in Handschuhsheim (approx. 110  m above sea level ) and follows the mostly twisted stream route back to the confluence with the Dossenheimer Mühlbach to the northwest on the left side close to the mostly twisted stream route; On this last section there are no open watercourses in the flat urban area and in the agriculturally used valley floor there are at most periodic water-carrying ditches leading to the Neckar.

A little more than half a square kilometer of the catchment area belongs to the municipality of Dossenheim on the northern edge , the remaining seven square kilometers are in the Handschuhsheim district of Heidelberg.

Recreation

The Mühltal is above the retention basin at the Turnerbrunnen, where there is a parking lot, a popular local recreation area for the people of Handschuhsheim and Heidelberg. The valley, which is close to the settlement area of the city, is very quiet due to the Talknick a little up the retention basin above. On both lower slopes, paths near the stream lead up to the Strangwasenhütte. A wooden footbridge and a forest path that crosses the stream also allow those circular routes who do not want to face the full five kilometers and about 220 meters in altitude from the Turnerbrunnen to the Strangwasenhütte and back. For even longer tours there are paths and trails to the Hoher Nistler , the White Stone and over the Zollstock saddle to the Heiligenberg .
